The one major downside to this (and most simple iron farms) is that the villagers remained panicked most of the time which increases lag. [βArranging to have the villagers panic only when needed to spawn a golem (but not during the cool down) does significantlty raise the complexity, however.] I'd be inclined to build something like this as an early game iron farm (when I've got few 'cycle-hungry' builds) and add system to brake the line-of-sight as I progressed.
Is the lag that big of a problem? I haven't done my research on that front, but I don't think 3 villagers would be that much. And then there's the complexity, which I tried to avoid as much as possible, because I usually build this farm in my first few days with stone tools, so redstone and soul sand are not an option :(
Three panicking villagers are signaficantly more laggy than three non-panicked villagers (and one only needs them panicked ~5 seconds every 35 seconds [the exact numbers and schedule vary by version, but 5 every 35 works in all AFAIK ]).
If the iron farm is most of what you have loaded, however [i.e. no/few autofarms / mob spawners / large numbers of entities], it's probably not enoughto be noticable.
(Depending on the 'social contract' of the server, lag minimizing can also be considered good etiquette or a requirement.)
Also, lag isn;t likely to matter very early game and one can simply add the redstone contraption to limit the time the villagers are panicked later should that become desirable.

RE the lightning: thgis is one reason I like world spawns that have large areas of desert, savanah, or snowy biomes π
