When fighting a pvp match always determine what type is it. Is it a 1v1 fair fight arena match? Is it an open field with the stuff you obtain (usually faction servers)? Or is it a fight over lava?
First your going to want to determine what it is, lets use faction server tactics.
Charge, when fighting charge head on be aggresive. When you are chasing someone they will usually die for sure. But if you are the person running away i guarantee that you wil die unless you use "car".

Arsenal MAKE POTIONS, if you know that the enemy is stronger than you, USE POTIONS. They will guarantee a win. So say i fight someone in diamond and im in iron. If i have potion i will win.
3 types of potions that are helpful
Poision- To imply most effective, splash him with poison 2 (poison 1 would work but 2 of course is the best) And run away, thats right RUN away. He will chase after you and it will take him a minute to proccess that he has been poisoned. After about 3-5 seconds of chasing Attack him, if you have enough armor to take his hits, you should be fine
Second way- Splash and charge, since he is poisoned he will take A LOT more damage than a regular fight. So if you charge at him, he should die quickly.
Instant Damage- To use this technique you are going to want to fill your inventory with either damage 1 or 2. This one whichever is fine. You are going to want to fill about 7-8 slots, 7 if you have a bow in there. When he charges at you UNLEASH THE WAVE and he will be low on health and you should be able to run after him and he should die
Speed- this is when you are desperate and you need to RUN the **** AWAY. Remember when using speed potions- You are always faster running not sprint jumping.

And Lastly regen. This is very important when fighting. Never use healing potions when fighting because if you use potions while being hit you are at a disadvantage and he will knock you back so that you cant hit him and he will continue. Find somewhere safe and youll just need about 3 seconds to drink and get back in the fight. Be careful with splash because it can heal them too. Remember this other tip ALWAYS EAT even if you are one down always EAT. For if you dont you will not regen.
