Many server owners take plugins for granted and never seem to appreciate all the work that developers put into making them great. I have ran multiple servers over the past 3 years now and I myself am ashamed to say I have not donated a single dime back to them. We use their plugins and in return we get donations to fund our servers and a little bit more (lets be honest now), I know that hundreds of servers are bringing in about 5k-75k+ monthly and yet they still do not give back to the people who truly have helped their servers.

Not only do I not see any donations going to plugin developers but I also question why projects like Bukkit do not recieve more donations (they barely get any as it is). Most multiplayer servers would not be possible without Bukkit, server owners demand updates as soon as a new Minecraft version is released and expect it to be perfect. It’s understandable that they won’t get what it takes to update Bukkit to a new version of Minecraft (I don’t even myself), but how do they think the developers of the project deserve to be harassed for pouring their hearts and souls in to a public project that gets them absolutely nothing but grief? If you make a profit off of your server that can only run because of the Bukkit project then you should be throwing a little money their way.

People don’t realize how far even a small donation like $5 goes with developers. That’s a pizza right there to eat while they code! Getting the donation gives them the drive to continue to improve their plugins and let’s them know that people do appreciate the work.

So take sometime to think about this and maybe next time give back, I know I will.

How would you know if a plugin dev gets money or not? It's not like they post it on twitter every time they receive $5.

What do you expect? Owning a server is the closest a lot of people will ever get to ruling the world.

Personally, I intend to do it for real.

The thing is, most people make plugins, special kinds of servers (bukkit) for fun. That is why you do it. FOR FUN! Most of these developers make money from Advertising. Using Adfly, and Ads on sites to get money. That is how a lot of people make the money they need. Youtubers make money from the ads on thier videos. and this is how developers make money. I think donating is a good thing. Helps them get the money needed for better hardware/software, They will still get some money from, if they have one, job, and the ads. Most people only do it in thier free time. just for fun.

I'm simply saying give back if you can, not saying "OH YOU HAVE TO DO IT!" Its a nice gester and makes them feel good and want to continue even if they do it because they like to, the gratification of recieving something back is always nice.

I like you. You make a good point. The Minecraft community is that of hobbyists. We share content and mechanics to play a common game together in a variety of fun ways. Money is just an extra bit if it comes!

Egotistical isn't the right word. You mean ungrateful.

It takes a lot of work to properly run a server with staff, a website, a store, billing, advertisement, and way more. Payment is rarely required to play on a server that takes actual work to maintain physically and technically. Payment is rarely required for plugins as well.

Let's not forget that a plugin developer is utilizing Minecraft's code. Creating plugins for profit is not unlike making profit off mechanics that exist behind the scenes in Minecraft already. Remember... nobody should build off Mojang's work and EXPECT anything in return.

Developers and server owners alike! They're made for fun!

I completely agree. If they helped you, even indirectly, with anything they should get some of the profit.
