Prologue: Winter

Steve shivered in the bitter cold, a cold most unsettling. It was Winter once again in the Minecraft world. Seasons were never a thing before Herobrine, before that cursed year. Now everything had been thrown into disarray. Steve had to keep his wits about him; Herobrine's blazing white eyes would be almost impossible to see in the snow, and he might mistake another player for him. The players were scarce these days, as all of them had either died, gone into hiding, or been captured by Herobrine. How had this happened? It all seemed to happen so suddenly. The glowing totem.. the furious cold.. and now, the absence of players. It was rare to even see a villager. Yet something prodded Steve on, telling him to stay alive, maybe even to fight back. Steve gazed up at the cold grey sky before walking off in the direction of the warmly glowing lights.
1 - January
The beginning of a new year - and the beginning of the madness.

The totem shone in Heticia's vision, beckoning him to come closer. He obeyed, knowing what was to happen next. It was almost time.. No, time is not given, time is not a constant. Heticia knew he had to remember that. He gazed silently down the mountain and into the valley, where the players were celebrating the new Year. It was almost 12:00, and soon everything would change.. perhaps not for the better, though. Heticia almost wanted to join the party far down below, to join with the music and people, but no. He knew he was just a servant, and it didn't matter if he died. The one thing he was meant for was to begin the Summoning. He was the only one who could do this, as he was the last in the Falbrin bloodline. The clock rang out twelve times from below, and the entire town erupted in cheers and applause. That was Heticia's cue; he placed his trembling hand upon the now flaming pillar.

...

The entire town feel into a harsh silence. The sky was glowing with auras of great power, stirring up a soft breeze. Torches flickered, casting errie shadows across the Town Center. A great and horrible laugh suddenly broke the silence, and the players started to whisper amongst themselves.

"What was that?"
..
"Is that..?"
..
"Not possible!"

All of their voices started to overlap, sounding more panicked by the second. The laugh sounded again, closer now, and more sinister. The voices continued to rise, the breeze getting stronger. Two white eyes suddenly gazed at the players from the town's entrance, burning into the souls of all. The crowd fell into a terrified hush. A body formed around the eyes, a body that was normally associated with 'noobs'. The players gasped as a whole, and the entire town fell into an inky black darkness.

-About a week later-

The entire town was empty as Steve walked into the entrance. It seemed that a huge pack of Snow Golems had exploded; the town was frozen over, icicles hanging everywhere, and not a single entity in sight. Not even a hostile mob could survive in this extreme winter. Luckily, Steve had prepared himself against the harsh environment. The cold had spread quickly, through uncountable towns and cities, freezing everything in its icy path. Who knew how far it had gone by now? No-one knew. The small town of Greenhert was apparently the cold's origin. The well was so badly frozen over that it looked like a huge ice block in an ice spikes biome. A small flicker of movement grasps Steve's vision suddenly. He quickly draws his sword, sneaking silently to what he was sure was his doom. If it was Herobrine, then Steve knew he wouldn't survive. He was already exhausted just from the walk to Greenhert, and his food was low as well. Steve slowly peeked around the ice block, and found something rather unexpected. A gleaming stone, shining a brilliant blue. He reached out to pick it up, but a low, deep voice thundered through the entire town, shaking Steve to his bones: "Don't touch that."

2 - February
Lost chances will quickly find their way into your life again.. it's just how you choose to see them.

"NO." Steve roared through the bars of his cell. "Please? You won't be hurt.. just tell me where the players are." Herobrine's eyes glinted tauntingly at Steve, coaxing him for answers. His 'innocent' tone was buttery smooth, obviously a lie. "I could never hold you up to your word. The last time we made a deal, Alex almost died." Steve's fury was burning inside of him. If only he could get his hands on a sword.. his rage would fuel him to destroy this creature. "Fine, fine.. my offer still stands." His voice was now angry, revealing his true intentions. Herobrine stalked off, letting his words sink it. It always worked on Steve. It worked on everyone. Now it was time to wait, and he had all the time in the world.

...

"Why in the world does we want the players..?" Steve wondered aloud. In his hands, he was examining the crystal he had found a month ago. It seemed to be an eternity. Why had Herobrine wanted this thing? It just seemed to be another diamond, and those were useless now. Upon closer examination, however, a strange symbol seemed to be glowing just under the crystalline surface. Steve looked closer, and the symbol almost looked like.. a Δ. "D-Delta.." Steve managed to choke out. "The last time I've seen this was.. last year. Near the mountain that I'm on right now. Is it possible..?"

-Two months earlier-

"Lost again?" The voice was gruff, but a warm friendliness was underneath. "Yep.. I don't know how I manage." Steve chuckled, seeing his old friend, Yukal. The two briefly shook hands. "Well, care to show me the way?" Steve grins. "It's like tradition now.." Yukal silently rolls up his sleeves, revealing a complex tattoo that was shaped like a Δ - Delta. "Let's begin. It's a long way down the mountain." Yukal almost seemed afraid.. but of what? He was a strong man, built sturdy after years of fighting for his village. What could he possibly have to fear? Everything was fine.. right?
3 - March
What is hope? It can burn as bright as a star, or be so dark that nobody will cling to it. Human emotions are a strange concept, especially because I am no longer human.

"Hero.. brine..!" Steve gasped, several wounds bleeding badly. "What? Not strong enough?" Herobrine smirked coldy, as if enjoying Steve's pain. "Y-You'll.. pay.." Using his sword as a support, Steve finally got up to his feet. Herobrine floated a couple blocks away from him, an amused look on his face. "You.. must have no morals.. to do this.." Steve knew that taunting the malicious entity before him would likely result in his losing his last heart, but he didn't care. "Mm, morals. What a concept. It's as if.. you expect sympathy!" Herobrine broke into a roaring laugh as soon as he uttered the words. Steve scowled, hating Herobrine more by the second. He raised his sword, ready to strike and deal at lease some damage. "Oh, better watch where you're waving that pointy stick! You could get into trouble.." Steve's sword melted instantly is his hands, destroying any chance of doing damage against Herorbine. "No.." Steve blacked out soon after.

- Two weeks later -

The stone brick finally gave way after weeks of chisling. Steve's cell was filled with a furious cold, chilling him to the bone. Steve knew he had to escape, but he was unprepared against the cold brought by Herobrine. He searched through his inventory, and at the very depths of it, he found a book. "I.. had a-almost forgotten about this.." Steve gingerly pulls out an old and yellowed book. His survival guide, written so many years ago that Steve barely remembered using it.. maybe he didn't, now that he though about it. Perhaps the guide would contain some useful information? Steve cracked open the book, and began to read.

...

"Squint your eyes, and never face the wind.. got it." Steve recited the words once more before squeezing through the small hole, ready to face the beast which was called Winter.

Interlude I - Spring

A flower silently blossoms on a snowy mountain. Perhaps there was hope for life after all? Quiet footsteps sounded from nearby, getting closer, as if seeking out this new life. As the days went by, the snow cleared. Grass and flowers sprouted up, waking to Mother Nature's call. This should have been impossible, however, as Minecraft did not have seasons. It had biomes. Something was obviously wrong, but Steve knew exactly what.
Herobrine.

4 - April
So, the seasons are changing? Who knew.. one would think that people would be happy to have seasons, but no. They'll see what happens when they're ungrateful.

"Steve." Alex said, flicking the hair out of her eyes. She was a strong minded woman, she knew what she wanted, and was willing to fight to get it. Steve had finally arrived at Nueri, a larger village at the other side of the mountain range. He was the first to see the first signs of life, and the beginning of Spring. Trees were growing again, which meant that people cold gather firewood if needed. Players were starting to return, and people weren't that fearful anymore. Steve still had to wonder.. what was the Delta sign for? He still had the diamond in his inventory. "Steve.." Alex said, a bit more urgently this time. "Oh-! Uh.. right." Steve quickly followed after her, and into the evening light.

- One week later -

"Therefore, our defenses would have one huge weakness. Herobrine would easily find it." Alex's words were precise and calculated, aimed at Steve more than anyone else in the room. "I see." Steve sounded exhuasted. he had been up all night with some of the elders in the village, planning on how to defend against another attack. There had been fifteen in the past few days alone. "Any other suggestions? If not, I believe we should all get some-" The old villager's words were cut off by Alex. "No. If we rest, we may sleep through Nueri's doom." Alex looked around the table. "Do any of you want that?!" Silence. "That's what I thought. There will be no rest untill we are completely safe." The silence was broken by Steve's words, soft and timid: "There's no safety against Herobrine."

...

"Spring? Never heard of it. If this is such a happy season, there will be no fear among the players. This will cost us.. time." Heticia shivered, far more scared than he was at the Pillar of Summoning. "Y-yes, sir. I'll carry out y-your orders, sir. Herorbine smiled. "Good.. everything will go according to plan."

5 - May
Players are getting less common, but even after every attack I make, they don't lose hope. Why is that? What is hope..?

Steve was a stronger man now. The attacks strengthened him, pushed him to do better. Though many players were dead, those who were alive refused to give up. Steve and Alex were an amazing pair in the battlefield, falling many of Herobrine's minions. This encouraged many people. Maybe everything would be alright..

...

Steve was in the library, researching all he could on the mysterious Delta symbol. He had managed to find a very useful piece of information in a large, yellowed book. "Δ is the symbol of Herobrine's power. If the symbol merges with a stone of any kind, that stone will become the very source of his power. Herobrine will be most powerful if the Δ is merged with a diamond. Never trust anyone wearing this symbol. Their soul has been taken by the symbol, and turned into power. They will only be a shell of their former selves. Never try to de-" The page ended there, unreadable due to what looked like fire damage. Steve's eyes widened as he read over a certain passage again: "Never trust anyone wearing this symbol."

- Three weeks later -

"Yukal!" Steve shouted, his voice echoing around the mountain. After weeks of planning, preparing, and training, Steve had finally been approved to find Yukal. It was dangerous to go out of the towns, as Herobrine could attack at any moment. Steve continued to walk the mountains, not knowing he was being watched.

...

Through the evening fog, Herobrine watched Steve search. He knew that Steve had found the legend of the Delta symbol. The rest of the book had been burned. The information is incomplete. He couldn't possibly know..

6 - June
Fire. Burn them all. Yes, that's what I'll do. All I need is Steve..

"Yuka-" Steve was quickly cut off by the howling wind. Not soon after Steve had started searching, a furious wind had whipped up, but this one wasn't normal. This wind felt like it had come straight out of a desert. Steve hadn't come prepared for this one, so he was left defenseless against the blazing hot gusts.

...

Many hours later, Steve had finally come across Yukal's dead body, lying face-down in the grass. There was no snow in the mountains, as the hot winds had melted it all. "What a fool.. trusting Herobrine?" Steve sighed. He had expected Yukal to smarter than this. Perhaps he could provide some clues, though. Steve fliped Yukal over, and looked at his tattoo. His supicious were quickly confirmed, as the Delta symbol blazed in Steve's vision.

- Two weeks later -

The attack alarms sounded all too suddenly. The town of Nueri was under attack by Herobrine's minions again, but the hot winds were much too extreme to go out in. "Alex.." Steve said, very impatiently. Alex turned with a glare. "What? Do you not think I'm doing everything I can?!" Steve flinched at her harsh words. "N-no.. I just-" Alex turned away, running towards the storage area without giving Steve a second chance.

...

"Good.. good. This is working very well.." Herobrine was floating just above Nueri's Town Center, smiling coldly at the scene of destruction below him. "Yes.. their 'defenses' weren't nearly enough for your genius plan, sir." Heticia bowed low, though much against his will. If he wished to live, he must follow every one one of Herobrine's orders down to the letter. No exceptions. "It's almost Summer.. do you have the trap ready?" Herobrine turned towards Heticia, expecting only 'yes' for an answer. "Y-yes, sir. I do. Steve will not escape." The wind howled a bit louder, powered by Herobrine. "Good. This will go a lot smoother than I thought.."

Interlude II - Summer

The wind was so hot, it felt like it came straight from the Nether. The sun was shining a bit too brightly in the sky, and all the plant life was dying. "What.. what is this?" Steve croaked. Water was evaporating, which wouldn't normally happen, but then again.. with Herobrine, what was normal? The horrible heat had come only days after the major attack on Heticia. Many smaller towns had burned to the ground. Brewers had to work overtime, brewing as many Fire Resistance potions as they possibly could. Something had to be done, and Steve had a hunch about the Delta symbol.

7 - July
Resisting will not make you last any longer..

Alezi gripped her sword harder, facing the terrible beast. "You WILL pay for the lives you have taken." Herobrine smirked, as if amused by these words. "Alright.. debit or credit?" He burst into a loud, evil laughter as soon as he finished. "Th-that's not funny!" Alezi was losing her focus. "No? Well, time to get back to our fun!" Herorbine charged Alezi, slicing so fast, his blade seemed to be air itself. "Ngh-! You.. won't win!" she managed, desperately trying to block his strikes. "I wouldn't be so sure."

...

"Oh, wonderful.. the deserts are only getting hotter?" Steve groaned at the very thought. Alex nodded. "According to my calculations, the sea will be the only biome inhabitable by the end of August." Steve did not like this, as he had abandoned the sea long ago due to mass flooding. Maybe he could still find the ruins of his long-lost massive city, and house those who were still alive? "I think I might have a plan.." Steve turned to the sea once more, ready to face the dark waters.

- Three weeks later -

"Finally fixed all the leaks.." said a soaking-wet Steve. "Wonderful. I don't suppose this place has a shower? It's like a dump in here." Alex said, her tone flat. Deep Sea was almost completely destroyed after it had been flooded. Something had happened, and Steve suspected Herorbine.

8 - August
Ahh, what a wonderful season! Fire everywhere, and not a single hope for humanity.

Alex's dire predictions were turning out to be true so far. Everywhere a player could normally travel, it would be so hot that flames would appear on any flamable surface.. including skin. Many more players had died, as they couldn't reach Deep Sea by normal means. The players who did get inside Deep Sea were growing restless.. how long would it been untill Herorbine found them?

...

"They think they're safe..? How silly. Surely they must know that there IS no hiding." Herobrine was speaking absentmindedly, preparing the brand that would make Alezi his slave. Alezi scowled, watching the Delta symbol come closer. "You'll regret this.."

"That's what they all said.. and I never did."

...

A red light flashed on the dirty steel wall of Deep Sea--a leak had occured. Steve and Alex were rushing to repair it, as were several other players. "Junction 7-A!" a player called out. "Right! Everyone, let's move" All the players who were willing ran to the site, and were met by two warmly glowing eyes. They shimmered in the deep, sending a wave of fearful gasps through the crowd of players. They had been found, and now it was time to fight.

9 - September
The silly humans think they can fight back! How ludicrous!

The fighting had already gone on for a week. Many players were dead, and several others were mortally wounded. Steve and Alex had somehow managed to keep fighting throughout the break, which wasn't surprising, seeing as they were always astounding in combat. "Steve! Cover my back!" Alex was preparing a bow with a poison arrow, hoping to whittle Herorbine's health down. Steve moved in front of her, and though bleeding and brusied, he stood his ground. If Deep Sea was destroyed by Herorbrine, everybody stood no chance on the surface.

...

Alex fired the arrow, hoping that it would go unnoticed untill it hit the horrid beast. Everything seemed to happen in slow motion as the arrow found it's target, Herobrine grunted in pain, thinking it just another slice to his armor. How wrong he was.

...

Alezi was fighting too, but on the wrong side. The players didn't know of her at the time, so they thought she was another fighting hero. This only ended in more deaths, and soon the players had to fall back. Herorbine was winning.

Interlude III - Fall

The battling continued on for weeks, even into the next month. Summer transitioned into Fall, and the heat finally went away. There was now a soothingly cool breeze, paired only with cold nights and warm days. The players didn't know about Fall, however. They barely even knew how long they had been fighting. All they knew was that they couldn't give up. Herobrine must be stopped.

10 - October
Once again, my power is at a minimal. I must retreive that diamond.. if Steve finds out what to do with it..

The attack had finally ceased. Steve, Alex, and the rest of the players were forced to evacuate Deep Sea. Many weeks later, Deep Sea would completely flood and become part of the sea once more. The players moved out across many burned villages, and began to rebuild. The attacks ceased for the time being, and people could help but wonder if Herobrine had given up. Steve and Alex weren't convinced. "Why would he give up so easily? That would be foolish, especially after such an attack." Steve was wondering out loud, but the question was also aimed at Alex, who was walking alongside him. "I suspect the attack was meant to get us out in the open. Underwater was a smart plan, but once again, he outsmarted us." Alex said, seeming to be in a good mood. The small village of Aegi was slowly becoming more prosperous, and expanding her borders was just one item on the massive agenda. New players were starting to join again, which meant a larger demand for housing and food. That day, the sun was shining brightly, but not nearly as bright as in the Summer. "So, we're falling once again for his trap.. he's good." Steve's words were edged with reluctance, as if afraid to give the beast a compliment. "Mmm.. if we're going to be falling for this 'trap', we best up our defenses again. I don't want Aegi to be destroyed as Nueri was." Steve nodded, already thinking about something else.

...

Steve closed the thick book with a thud. "It seems like every source on this Delta symbol has been burned.. most likely by Herobrine. He's hiding something, I can tell.." His thoughts were soon interrupted by a strange pulsing in his inventory. Steve fished out the diamond moments later. The Delta symbol was glowing brightly, as if responding to something. He looked around, as if expecting Herobrine to be behind him. A small, previously unnoticed book was glowing on the shelf behind him with the same light as the diamond. Steve pulled the book out of it's slot on the shelf, and began to read.

"The Delta symbol is a symbol of Herobine's power, rivaled only by the power of Notch. If fused with an Eye of Ender, the symbol will lead to Justice Cove, where the guardian of Herobrine's Realm resides. The very source of the power of the Delta symbol, and Herobrine's power itself, will be in his realm. No recorded accounts of the place have been found, only an explorer's old journal has ever confirmed the exsistance of such a place." Steve sighed. He had no idea where to find an Eye of Ender. Maybe one of the villagers would be willing to trade? If so, Steve only needed a couple more things--A sword, armor, potions, and a will to actually do this.

11 - November
He's found the legend.. the one book I did not burn. The situation is dire.

"Listen.. I need the eye if i'm stop stop Herobrine!" Steve was desperately trying to buy an Eye of Ender to infuse with the diamond. "Come back when you have the money.. not everything's free in Minecraft." The merchant seemed unwilling to part with the eye. Even after Steve offered him a diamond sword, he still refused. "Y'know, I bet he can get it from Raguel at a much cheaper price." Alex said from behind Steve, grinning. "Well, I say! His items are so overpriced, you might as well be buying the village itself!" Alex only grinned more. "Mm.. I saw that he only sells Eyes for an emerald apiece.. so much better than your prices.." The merchant became more furious. "Why that- I'll sell it to you for one bar of gold. Take it, or go to Raguel." Steve grinned at Alex, then gave the merchant the gold. After obtaning the Eye, Steve quickly went back to his house. It was time to prepare.

- Two weeks later -

"Everyone, listen up. We're about to head into Herobrine's realm and destroy his source of power. With luck, we'll be back before Herobrine knows we're there. Once we have destroyed the power source, we'll seek him out, and kill him, restoring peace to Minecraft. Does everyone understand?" The small gathering of players cheered. Steve nodded, then turned towards the swirling portal. He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and ran through.

12 - December
They dare?! They dare enter my realm, and act like I won't even lift a finger? How foolish..

The searching had gone for a few weeks with no luck. Herobrine's domain was massive, spanning uncountable chunks. It looked like a cross between the Nether and the End. "We're never gonna find it.." Alex said, discouraged. "Alex.. we have to find it. If we don't, we'll never be able to defeat Herobrine." Alex just sighed. "We're not going to find it like this.. just having players randomly sprint about. There has to be a more efficent way to do this." Steve smiled. "I think I know a way.."

...

"Don't worry, we'll certainly be done by Christmas." Steve had found a command block, and was scanning the realm for any major power source. It would take a long while, but it would work. It had to. "Hey.. what's that? I've never seen that before." Alex pointed to a small, glowing flicker of light. It seemed to be growing larger, as if coming closer. "I.. don't like the looks of that." Steve drew his sword, ready to fight. The light grew brighter, and closer still, now casting shadows across the realm. It suddenly bursted into a humanoid form with a loud, low bang. "Good evening. I'm ready for round two." Herobrine said, grinning coldly. Steve gripped his sword, a major improvement from months before when he had been hesitant to fight. "As am I." The two clashed, swords ringing across the barren landscape. Each had a look of determination and fury upon their face, both wanting to destroy the other. Steve suddenly swiped down, leaving himself open but striking Herobrine's leg. He cried out, slicing at Steve's arm. The blade connected, taking many hearts. Alex pulled the string on her bow, ready to fire. "Keep.. fighting.." Steve managed through the pain. The duel went on for hours, each seeming to gain nothing but lose nothing. They were evenly matched, even down to the fighting technique. Others had tried to help, but Herobrine had set up a wall of barriers, preventing any interference. Steve and Herobrine were locked in the battle.

...

What seemed like years later, but was in fact only a couple days, Herobrine had finally tired. The players had found his power source, and were rapidly working on destroying it. Steve kept pressing on, determined not to lose this chance. After the past year, there was finally hope.. hope to see Minecraft normal again. No, Steve could not lose. He would not lose. This battle was the final one, and if he lost, then there would be no more chances. This was it. Just.. keep.. fighting..

...

Herobrine's power source was destroyed only an hour later, ensuring Steve's success. "Herobrine! You have seen the end of your days. Your rule ends here, and now." Pure fury was in Steve's eyes as he stabbed the sword down, taking the last of his hearts. Herobrine could do nothing more than growl in pain. His eyes dimmed. The sword clattered out of his hands. It was over. Finally.

Herobrine's eyes completely went out, like a redstone lamp's energy being cut.
He breathed his final breath,
then was still.
Finally.

Epilouge - The Flames of Time

Steve smiled as he watched the snow fall down. It was a gentle snow, nothing like the weather that Herobrine had brought. "Hey.. what are you doing?" Alex asked, smiling. "Nothing." Steve said. "Just remembering the past year.. and how crazy it was." Alex smiled again, wrapping an arm around him. "Yeah.. I couldn't have asked for a better ending, though. Now come on, open your present." Steve grinned, then turned back to the Christmas tree and the warm flames in the fireplace. The Delta Diamond hung over it, next to a somewhat yellowed and charred calendar, burnt by the flames of time.

The End.

Oh, okay. I saw the note that said "Contest Participant"; I thought that meant that that was all it was. Alright, that makes much more sense. :D
