Just a note... (Do not include in final word count)

I watched the sun steep below the horizon, the dewdrops capturing the remaining light leaving the forest drenched in golden honey. I watched the moon rise, the first night of spring begin. Sweet moonlight, honey became milk, warmth became cool, and happiness, solemn. The forest grew alive with the sound of the crickets, I perked my ears at their every strike of their bows and watched the fireflies dance, leaving a path of yellow light. And then, the serenity was broken. The chorus of a bullet, the explosion of a gun.
Spring meant fertility, but it also meant hunting, it also meant death. I galloped, running as far from the sound as I could, not looking back, just running towards the blackened horizon dashed with the purples of the afterthought of the sunset. The cold night air strained through my fur as I stumbled over rocks, my ears and eyes perking at every sound. And then I stopped, there was a fence, rusted barbed wire. I just stood there as I looked through the wire, flashes, blurs, of color whizzed by. They looked to be running across a black river, still and silent, painting the blackened waters with their light. I remembered the young buck that walked across its river stones before the fence appeared. I watched as a blur hit him, and I watched his life flash before him. I backed away from the black river digging my hoofs in the sandy dirt, watching the light fly past me wondering what a world this had become and why the black river came into the forest.
