Grammar and Spelling Blogs: Why They're Pointless

So, to start this off, I'd like to state that this is considered a review of all the other blogs that have been created with the topics I'll be discussing. Grammar and Spelling. Not the base of each subject, but just my opinion on them. As well as my opinion on blogs that pick to write about grammar and/or spelling. I find it kind of funny, but I'll admit first off: My grammar and spelling may become butchered near the end of this blog. We'll see.

But my blog is the best and has perfect grammar, punctuation, and spelling!

I'm afraid that is not the case, my dear. You see, spelling is not hard to fix, nor is punctuation. Yet, grammar. Grammar is the vixen that hides in the shadows and jumps at any chance it can to manipulate and toy with our choice of words. Grammar is the Goddess of writing and does not care how you view her. Grammar is mean.

Grammar is also forever changing. If I could find the comment I left on someone's blog, I'd be sure to share it with you. However, it seems that I lost it. So, to loosely quote myself:

"Grammar always changes. There's no right or wrong in most cases. Writing styles are what influence how the author's grammar is. Of course, we could all write like one another, but that's boring."

And indeed it is. So, claiming you have the best grammar is a shot in the dark. No one has perfected grammar, and no one ever will.

But... But I took an English Writing class!

So did I, coincidentally enough. And I bet a lot of other people out there did, too. So, that means what? Oh, it means we all have a basic understanding of the English language and choose to type how we desire.

To go off onto a mild tangent: I typically see the "Why Grammar Is Important" or "Proper Grammar" etc etc blogs picking on how people communicate on servers. Mainly how they choose to use poor spelling, and short clipped sentences rather than full blown words.

Example: hay grl wut u doin??
That is meant to be: Hey girl, what are you doing?

Now, I know what you're thinking, "How can people really write like this? Gosh I can't stand it!"
And that's my main point: why bother pulling your hair out because of someone else choosing to writ lyk dis?

It's my OCD, I swear it!

Oh, so now people have OCD because of other people using poor grammar. Lovely. I'll keep that in mind and be sure to step on all of your OCD triggers to see if you really and truly are suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder. Using that as an excuse is sad. Just come out and say it; you do not like people that use poor spelling and grammar. YET, you yourself lack the complete understanding of grammar. To make matters worse, you say that you 'want to learn how to write better with perfect grammar!'

I'll repeat myself, again: grammar is never going to be perfected.

Never.

Well, why not?

You ask me why grammar will never be perfect? Simply because there is going to be an individual looking to break the standards and make our language even more complicated than it already is.

So, in closing, I'd like to say thank you for your time and for reading through this entire little article. I know for a fact I could touch on each subject in more detail, but I'll leave it short and sweet rather than not.

For Planet Minecraft's sake, I say we do away with blogs criticizing grammar and spelling. They're useless; and so is this. And if this get's removed, I won't even be offended.

Perhaps this blog will shine light on some of PMC staff to rid the PMC community of pointless rant blogs; especially ones less than 500 words.

Stay golden, PMC.

haha yeah. Most of the time I don't care about how someone types unless they're trying to be argumentative. If you cannot be properly grammatical ? then idk. I am not even making sense right now.

Thanks for reading!!

Perhaps a more appropriate title is "When they're pointless." This is technically a Grammar/Spelling blog and there are other blogs out there that address these issues and aren't rants.

I agree that this has a lot of valid points. Also, grammar doesn't just change, but the entire English language changes with it. Our words, our meanings, our use of them... A real language changes as people change and use it to suit their needs.

Thanks for posting.

A point I glossed over in the comments with someone else, I believe. This blog could be considered a rant, indeedly do. And I even left a disclaimer at the end of this blog that it could be taken down if need be. Especially since I wanted to get my point across that other blogs like this or "worse" than this should be taken down. But perhaps my point has been enforced. Several people have come to me with their opinions on the matter. :] And I've accepted them all with hugs!

You know, I agree with you. Writing full sentinces is never gonna be perfected. Why waist your time trying to fix others grammer, or fake OCD attacks, when you and everyone else will never perfect grammer. PMC is cursed with people ranting over other peoples grammer. grammers not even a small deal, especialy on the internet.

Personally, how I read it, I find the part about OCD mildly Offensive, rude and Stereotypical.
Although people can make mistakes which damage their blog, targetting People with what the governmental industries class as "Learning Difficulties" is just plain wrong.

I understand you have a strong opinion on this, but what about those of us who Actuallly do have a Problem? For Example: for Some of the people you are classing as excusive, their brain's aren't as quick or are Too Quick to pick up on Grammar errors. Other people have to pick it up, because their brains react to it as an Oddity, such as the following: 1 1 1 1. The target focus would be the third "1" as it stands out.

On the plus side, as I said before, you have a strong opinion, and strong opinions Are important.

I hope you understand how it reads to me.

Wow. So, first of all, this blog is not about people needing to use grammar; it's about why those blogs about people needing to use grammar to be nipped in the butt. Aka; everything you just said has nothing to do with what I wrote about. So, I feel as if you didn't read it at all. :[ And THAT is offensive, to me.

I state, within the context of the blog, that SOME people use OCD as an excuse as to why they WANT others to write with perfected grammar; not that people with OCD should write with perfected grammar.

Open mouth and insert foot, please.

Well Im sorry, but that is how it came across. By the way "Open mouth and insert foot, please." is an Uneeded and rude, and Demeaning comment. I myself am Dyslexic so don't judge me for " didn't read it at all ". That is how I read it personally. As I said, Clearly in one of my paragraphs some people have compulsion to do it as given by my Example. Also if you wish to play the " didn't read it at all " card I suggest you re-read my comment ;P Seeing as I said "us" not "Them" :P

This is a blog responding directly to the things others have claimed/said. The author isn't saying that those disorders have no value, but there are people who claim to have a disorder that they don't actually have to justify an issue around grammar/spelling--either for bad or good spelling, it doesn't matter.

Those that lie about it are hurting the people who do have a legitimate disorder, like yourself. I admit it wasn't as clearly phrased here, but that is what the post intended to critique.

This was a very interesting read, and on the whole I agree with it, however there is just one point that I would like to contest:

"You ask me why grammar will never be perfect? Simply because there is going to be an individual looking to break the standards and make our language even more complicated than it already is."
In fact, the opposite it true. People are constantly trying to simplify the language, as demonstrated in text speak, where more often than not, the vowels are removed, or else the writer will replace certain words such as "are" with single letter honomyns such as "r". The kind of people you talk about are known as prescriptivists, people who obsess over the idea that language must not change any further. However, it is evident when we look at Middle English, for example "That somme han slayn hir housbondes in hir bed" (Chaucer, Wife of Bath's Tale, line 766, c.1380), that language is in constant flux. If prescriptivists had their way, we would still have the "e" suffix at the end of nouns, and Capitalization would Be Seemingly Random. All in all, you're right, but language is becoming simpler, not more complex.

Of course language is being simplified; but not by everyone. You're glancing just at people who spend the majority of their time texting, and buried within social media. I meant authors. They are the future for the English language, and as their books hit best seller racks, those books set the grammar and spelling standards for our generations today.
