An outline on greifing, something used to express my thoughts, please leave comments on anything related to the topic! Refer to the Intro below to see the points being discussed.Greifers:

I. Intro
A. What are greifers?
B.Why do greifers greif?
C.How to stop them.

II. What are greifers?
A. People who destroy other's creations, there are MANY types of greifing.
1. Classy Greifers
a. People who go on servers (without hacked clients), and destroy wholebuildings using nothing put their own tools
2. "Pro" Greifers
a. Usually have a hacked client and a team, can do some serious damage to unmoderated servers, they usually just randomly destroy blocks. Or act like a Classy greifer and destroy the whole build, much quicker with a hackedclient.
b. May also place random blocks. Some favorites are random stacks of things usually sand or signs, and also swatizaka's. (Sorry if misspelled :P)
3. Random Greifers
a. Probably just bored people, wanting to take a bite of a server, they justdestroy whatever they can causing SUPREME ugliness
4. Accidental Greifs?
a. Accidental greifing? Impossible! But, what mean by this is people who are just mad at someone like someone built on their land, made fun of them, trolled them, and possibly even greifed them out of rage.
III. Why do greifers greif?
A. Probably one of the most debatable topics in all of Minecraft, here are some of my ideas
1. Bored, just being plain bored causes people to greif, these people are usually the"Random Greifers"
2. Jealousy! Most greifers say no to this, but it can be very true! Usually Accidental greifers locate in this section.
3. Teams, these are your internet trolls, annoying kids, and people who just do it for fun! D:
4. Disliking, aimed at the owner or the server in general. Someone just steamingmad at them (Maybe they had just banned their friend for something small, like over cussing) Usually the random greifer, just trying to make things ugly as possible before they're banned
5. The rush of greifing, when told not to these people think that it'd be cool to try and get away with it. Usually just randomly greifing cool buildings trying to get away with breaking the rules, for fun of course. (This was told to me in the comments, thanks for sharing your opinion!)
6. I'm sure there is a lot more, but I'm no greifer myself, meaning I have NO clue why people greif. These are just my personal opinions. (If you think you have a good reason, post a comment!)
7. Immaturity (submitted by ugug in the comments) There are young greifers who just don't know any better, usually not very good and tend to be "random greifers"
8. (By: ...Tebagging) Attention hungry! Just want to be the center of attention in chat about them. They probably have some pretty messed up REAL lives. *Probably a kid who had to be on 16 and pregnant because the parent made dumb decisions* Can be nearly ANY type of greifer but they still don't appear much on servers.
VI. How to stop them.
A. Staff! Moderators, you always want someone on at all times to be watching the players! This is mainly just common sense!
1. What you want your staff to look for
a. Get the Alerter plugin IMMEDIATELY especially freebuild servers and watchit like a hawk! If they spawn gold tools... INSTA BAN. Gold tools work with the hacked clients making it extremely easy to greif! D:
b. Nobodies, xD weird term. These are the people who make no move to have ANY social contact. These are very easy to spot on smaller servers, be watching them!
c. Anyone with a hacked client, most times they say the use it for the flymod or so they can just throw all their stuff in lava. Usually they simply lie about this.
B. Plugins
1. A Big Brother type plugin is a MUST, a few that i know of are
a. Hawk Eye
b. Big Brother (Derp!)
c. LogBook
2. I'm sure there are more, these are just a few.
4. Anti-TNT and lava plugins
a. These are usually in effect in all servers, this is why i didn't put it in "Kinds of Greifers"
1. This stops the lazy greifers looking to just destroy things by burning stuff. Not much more too it!

That's it! Please, if I missed anything or failed a spelling ( I didn't proofread after ) leave a comment. You're welcome. xD

Anywhoo, imo, griefers are peeps who have the potential to be unsuccessful/struggling in life. No pity on their lives, since they try to mooch off happiness from others in order to get any joy for themselves. :P

Good, informative post! However, griefing is defined differently by individual servers; on one server I played on, if you destroyed 2 player-placed blocks, you became a griefer and were globally and permanently banned. So, it's important to adhere to server rules, or you might be banned without warning.

BTW, I think the plugin you're looking for instead of "LogBook" is "LogBlock."

maybe they feel a bit like there breaking the rules and getting away with it unlike the real world where you cant get away with it. A bit like being a criminal in a game.

Another reason: they want attention. (I asked somebody who was caught griefing a server I frequently play on and he said "notice how the chat was based around me for the past 30 minutes? thats all I wanted")
