Ari knows what she has to do. You know, too. That there will be no happy ending. I’ve told this story a million times before. Different places, different names. Love, jealousy, hubris. They tell it to each other too. Why? When they know it cannot turn out well? Make themselves sad with tales of loss?”

“To practice the feelings, feel out their grief in a tiny way, so it doesn’t hurt so much when they are Ari or Jules or Emmett,” my brother replies. “It makes sense in a twisted way, doesn’t it?”

“Is that all they can do when their lives are so tragic? Spend their limited days in their own pockets of grief?”

“Not the only thing, I think. They make meanings for their lives too, short as they are. And you know what happens to the ones who try to create happiness while ignoring the pain and grief. You’ve seen it. They can’t. Or at least, can’t for long.”

“They’re all still so sad though. When the grief does happen.”

“Their pain is slow and numb and not spectacular or neat or fair at all. And then they can make art about it, tell stories about it, and slowly they find they’re not feeling all of it, all the time.”

“If you say so.”

“If you’re so bothered by it, tell me a happier one. Tell me about Helena and Anji.”

I sigh, and start the story again.

Super super sorry about the delay on this one! I had no idea what I was going to do with it for so long - not that that's an excuse, I should know I'm not going to magically come up with ideas if I don't actually sit down and think properly about it - and then it turned into this. A conversation between gods (maybe). I don't know what I'm doing and I certainly don't have any actual worldly wisdom (these ideas were shamelessly stolen from various other people - something Taliesin Jaffe said on Between the Sheets about sad stories being cardio for the soul, and another quote I saw but sadly didn't save and now I can't find! Clearly I didn't realise it would strike a chord with me!) but I hope this was interesting at least.

Anywho. Have a great day, and remember no feeling is final.
