This story is for GoggleD0GG's Stories of Scars Contest. It is also my first submission of 2020, enjoy!

Ten years ago today, I, Keldin, had been dumped on the side of the road by my father and left for dead. My mother had left when I was one and then at five years old, my father had given up on me. My mother couldn’t support us both, so I was left with an uncaring father, who dumped me by the road and drove off. The police found me and I was put in a foster home, but I never forgave my father. The abandonment stayed with me all my life, until recently. I never trusted anyone, and that led to lots of trouble. I moved from foster home to foster home, until no one else would take me. Finally, at eleven I was put in an orphanage. There I was cared for, but no one truly loved me. With all the other kids, how could they? But my life changed a few months back.

“Keldin,” Jamie, one of the orphanage workers called, “there’s some people here to see you.”

Who would want to see me? I thought. Rather reluctantly, I walked down the long staircase and into the large living room below, for I had been enjoying the music I was listening to in solitude. I turn the corner and enter the room, and see Jamie talking to and man and woman. The man was tall, had short brown hair, and a small bald spot, but he didn’t look old. The woman had long, straight brown hair, a cheerful face, and looked very young.

“Hello,” I said.

“Keldin, I would like you to meet Mr. and Mrs. Grover. They have been wanting to meet you.”

“Hello Keldin, how are you?” the man asked.

“Fine,” I answered.

“Keldin, we want to get to know you. If you want, we would like to adopt you.”

For a moment, I was stunned, and for a briefer moment, I was happy. I would have a family! But that all passed just as quickly as it came. Nobody will ever love me. They will just dump me back here in a few months. I will be stuck alone for the rest of my life, I thought. But I calmed enough to answer, “Why would you want to do that?”

This time Mrs. Grover spoke up, “Keldin, we have never been able to have our own kids, and we saw that you never had someone to love you. We want to fill that spot in your life, and love you as our own child.”

I sat for a moment and finally burst out, “Nobody could ever love me! You’ll just dump me on the side of the road like my father!” With that, I raced out of the room, and up the stairs to my room.

Later that night I sat pondering the conversation. What if there were people who would actually care for me? What if those people would actually love me? The Grovers will never come back now. I’ll never have a family. I was shocked the next day when they returned. But, once again, I couldn’t believe that they actually cared, but they kept coming and talking to me. Finally, I believed them, or at least decided to see if it was true. They adopted me and I went to live with them in their country home. They did all they said they would. They loved me, cared for me, and most importantly, they didn’t leave me on the side of the road. I learned to trust them and others. Some scars take time to heal, others take love, but mine took both. Well that and a point of view change on my part. Not all people are bad, but no one is perfect. We all make mistakes. But healing comes through trust and forgiveness.
