"Fandoms?", you say. "Why, I'm a part of a fandom, and I'm super awesome! So is my fandom, and the media franchise it's based on!" Well, you may be wrong. Notice, this is in my opinion, so don't think that I'm speaking for everyone.

A Fandom is a sub-group of a certain peice of media, and these people feel connected due to appreciation, or the feeling of being a part of something bigger.  These aren't normal fans, for they go beyond what a normal fan would do. A Star Wars fan would own the movies and maybe a T-shirt or two. A member of the Star Wars fandom would buy more merchandise, cosplay, write Fanfics, actively meet with other members, etc. Usually this stuff goes further than what most people would do to a peice of entertainment. The problem, is far stranger.

People in a fandom obviously adore their Fandom's franchise. But this can have a negative affect on a consumer. It's like a strange kind of Stockholm Syndrome. You love this franchise, even if the people behind it pull stupid and cheap moves. A Minecraft fan would see how the new EULA may just be Mojang pushing for more Realms sales, but a member of the fandom would rather defend or ignore this obvious move. Is this fair? What about all those Final Fantasy fans, and while obviously horrible games like FFXIII are released, they keep diverting the subject, or ignoring it. Even worse, is when they fully buy into these horrible moves. Steam and Nintendo, letting horrible games being released on Steam and the Wii, with no quality control. Sure, they have done great things, but this stuff should be noticed.

As I said, Fandoms are communities, the problem is that they are full of people with virtually the same opinion. A member will say, "Boy, the new manga chapter was great!", whilst another will say, "Yeah, I know!" This lack of different opinions cause people to not speculate or think. And don't say," Oh, nobody acts like that." Yes they do. People will praise the same thing over and over agian, with basically the same opinion. And when somebody puts out some real critiscism, they get rejected out of this cushiony spectrum.

Then you will say,"You just are a hater or want attention! [Insert TV show here] is amazing, and the creators are awesome!" Well guess what, the creators are doing thia for money. Starving artists make art because they are starving, not so they can please internet hipsters. No matter what, a media franchise will never be perfect, and it isn't good to act like it is. Why do people only want to hear good things about stuff they buy, or support? Is it because they feel uncomfortable about their purchases? Or is it because they feel as if they aren't perfect, so that way they treat things that they are interested in as if they are?

There is nothing wrong for critiscizing something, all it does is add a new perspective, instead of something somebody else has said many times before. Fandoms are un-healthy for conusmers, for it can somwhat blind them to any and all bad moves and ideas. I'm not saying,"Always critiscize and dislike everything." But don't be blind when somebody lies are pulls a cheap move on you. Buying exspensive merchandise, or supporting kickstarters that produced nothing are things I see to people do in Fandoms, with the shroud of,"Oh, it's fine. This thing they did once was really cool, and I liked it. Now I must keep buying into every single thing they do now!"

Know that this is my opinion, and feel free to put yours in the comments.
