First off, I want to start off with this, there is no way of telling how many times Steve has died, this Blog is to give you an idea. Now that that is cleared up, lets start off with how many Minecraft accounts there are.
Minecraft.net tells us that there 12,400,000 Minecraft accounts. (I rounded, the numbers change often.) I'm going to say that the average single player survival is about 5. The death ratio of an entire Minecraft survival game is about 9 deaths. (Not exact but about.)
9 times 5 is 45 and 45 times 12,400,000 is 558,000,000. (This number could be no where close keep that in mind.) This means that Steve has died about 558,000,000 times. Quite a lot. This number does not include multiplayer games. Thank you for reading.
The 9 deaths and 5 complete games were based off all my skype contacts and me.
Anything you would like me to figure out next?

Are you trying to figure out how many times people have died in minecraft overall?
Or are you trying to figure out how many times STEVE HIMSELF actually dies?
There is only one way to find out the answer.
Have a bunch of people look at their "Statistics" Menu in their menu. See how many times each have died. Do this with hundreds of people, then average it out. Then multiply that by about how many people play minecraft.
If you want it really exact. See how many times people die in one day. Then figure out how many people play minecraft, and the approximate number of people who get an account each day. Then use the number of days minecraft has been giving out accounts and you will get your answer.
