Story time !

Recently, I've built a desert temple. I wanted it to look massive, and to look good. I also wanted that building to teach me something, I wanted to improve in the process. I wanted some kind of arabesque or flourish that would take the whole width of the building. So I looked it up ! I remember googling something like "Arabesque pattern", and I came across something interesting : cross stitch patterns.

Cross stitch, for those who don't know, is the art of stitching on a canvas. When you buy a cross stitch model in a shop, it comes with a pattern you would have to reproduce on you canvas. And, I didn't know, but people actually share them online, which is very interesting for us. Those patterns come in the form of little colored squares showing you where you have to thread your needle. Replace those squares by Minecraft blocks and you have unlimited blueprints for your buildings !

You can find any design. From flourishes to pixel art, I'm sure you'll find something that will suit whatever you're building. It just takes a bit of time to find one that you like.

Now, I'll show you an example.
Here, let's take my desert temple. I looked on Google Image and find my arabesque thing, downloaded it :

I was interested in the bottom red design

I figured I liked the bottom red design, it would look good on the front of my temple, so I got with it.
I found the centers (design and build), counted my blocks, and reproduced the design, and a few minutes later I was done :

Finished product

Cool, right ?

Minecraft never fails to make me discover and study new things from architecture to drawing, and now cross stitch... I love to build things in this game, and I love to make research in order to get inspired.
Who could tell Minecraft would get a 35 years old bearded man like me interested in cross stitch ?

If you're interested in that technique, if you have questions, or if you find that completely stupid, let me know in the comments ;)
CreditCross stitch website I got the picture on. Don't remember what it was but I'll give credit if you know !

I've used perler bead petterns for Minecraft pixel art builds in the past. They're very useful and very similar to cross stitch patterns, except more figurative. Cool that you're sharing this, I'm sure plenty of people will find it useful :D
