So in my last blog about 1.9, I breifly talkede about how servers paint opinions. In this blog, I will talk in detail about what it is and the good/bad things about it. So, here we go.

So there has been a lot of competition between servers recently as probably all of you know. But this competition made a lot of things change. First of all, the types of serverss that are being made. Two words: "Factions" and "Prison". Due to all this competition, these servers have been becoming more and more popular, as more people see them as a way to stay in the game, while not focusing on originality. Now there's nothing wrong with not original servers, as long as they don't block by block rip another server off, and as long as they are fun. It really just depends what the specific players looks for. Having an original server does not always make it fun, so on it's own it's not a selling point, something people sometimes gloss over.

However an large issue this causes is the opinions on other servers this can create. Despite them being seperate servers and they are mainly based on competing with one another, they do work with each other with the people not even realising it most of the time. Together they sort of "paint a opinion painting" on other server types. Now the follow comes from expierence. I own a vanilla, not base gamemode based server, and one theme I noticed since I started my server are 2, very important yet incorrect opinions: Vanilla=bad and vanilla=only what you do in survival or creative. Why are they important? Because they really limit the community from expierencing vanilla servers because of incorrect statemets. And where do these incorrect statements came from that too much of the community think is true? Other servers of course. Plugins have became a staple part of so many servers, so through more servers using them to try and stay ahead of competition, it resulted in them being seen as a staple. While it's just an addon. Both vanilla and plguin servers are good, but you don't need plugins to create economy or prison, or a "fun" server in general. It's about fun, not technicalities.

So for now I want to leave you with this: Do not help competition ruin the community and be more open to other servers.

Agreed. People should be more open minded and try different servers.

That's why my server isn't something that's been done a thousand times. :^)

Remember though that it still has to be fun. Otherwise it's an empty gimmik.

As long as you find it fun it's a good direction to pursue but you asking others what they think of your server is very helpful. Just remember to make it clear what your server is about when asking for opinions. I sometimes ask people what they think of a vanilla, not survival server. And the first thing 90% of the people say is "so it's creative?" while it's not.

If you're talking an adventure server that's one of the few great types of servers that are seldom found. Making an adventure server takes a lot of work since you can't have players making content be your server's content. It takes hard work and I have a lot of respect for those who make good adventure servers.

True, but it's not an adventure server. Everyone is in adventure mode though. (except for staff)
