first you need a whole lot of torches.
then some pickaxes and mine to somewhere between 16-5.
keep mining until you find a lava pit or diamonds and dig around the lava and see if diamond are around there
and you should be able to find diamonds!

[tip] i find most my diamonds by bedrock
[tip] dont dig down unless 1x2
[tip] always check for diamonds in npc villages
