So, you might be struggling with getting people on your server, and, I've had the same struggle too. BUT here are 3 things you can do to increase your server's player count!
STEP 1: Preparation!
To have a server with good o'l players on, you need to have everything setup right. Do you have enough RAM? Did you configure your plugins correctly? Do you have a good spawn? If you answered NO or if you have no idea what RAM is, or what a plugin does, you need to gtfo server owning, and just play Minecraft.
A good spawn isn't about having the most fancy buildings. A good spawn is informational, but with minimal reading. If you need to walk for 10 mins JUST TO FIND all the signs, or if your server has no info/get started stuff, expect 0/(slots you have).
Also, you need to ask yourself, How does my server make it different from the BIG GUYS? What makes it unique to make my server become one of the big servers? If your server is a duplicate of another server, chances are, your server is guaranteed to fail. If you are entering a competitive niche, you need to be passionate with what you do, and you need to avoid having the exact same things as other servers.
STEP 2: Getting your server ready!
Alright, you have set things up, made your spawn, and you are ready to open! Well, stop. You need to make sure things are 100% ready for the wilderness.
Check point A: How much RAM do you have for your server? If you want 20 - 500 people going on, 2GB or under WILL NOT work. You will need atleast 8GB if you want to be the "Next Big server". Also, be sure to get DDoS protection IF you have the money! Getting DDoS-ed is NOT fun and it will make you loose players!
Check Point B: Did you make any mistakes on your signs at your spawn? Is it going to appeal to everyone? If you have typo's all over your signs, chances are, people will leave instantly. If you want to own a top server, your server needs to have professional grammar. If your spawn looks like crap with many signs, you will get people from using Step 3, but they will leave. Having a presentable spawn is key in keeping people in. 3 Tips I have for spawns are: 1. Informational, but not a lot of reading. 2. A shop or a place where players can sell/buy items. 3. If your spawn is big, add speed boost so they can travel easier.
STEP 3: Time to advertise!
Every server needs some sort of advertising in the beginning. Spamming on other servers WILL NOT get you ANYWHERE. If the owner is online or if the people on the server you are spamming are loyal, they WILL get you back for spamming. Spamming on Youtube Videos will NOT work either. IF YOU WANT trolls and dicks on your server, advertise on servers and youtube videos. BUT if you want legit people, here are some places you can advertise for FREE and for a small price.
A. MAKE youtube videos: IF you have a legit screen recording program and if you can edit videos, upload videos of your server. They will not get many people on, however, it will help.
B. Post your server on Forums, PMC, Server lists, and Tell your skype friends/Facebook friends.
C. IF you have money to spare, check out Project Wonderful and Google Adwords. Google Adwords work if you have a Server Ad video and tag it so that the ad gets played on big youtuber's video. Also, you can bid on Server Lists to get "Sponsored" spots, HOWEVER, people bid over 9,000 (haha) dollars, and it probably will never happen for you unless you are VERY rich ;).
