Ok, so I have seen multiple instances of people asking how to install mods and, in some spelling cases, how to add 'mobs'. These people often receive no help as well. So I have decided to put together this comprehensive guide on installing all your favorite mods. WARNING: This guide is written with the intention of those who have windows. If you would like to write the mac part of this guide, add the_basement_nerd on Skype.

Part 1; MODLOADER

Modloader is a very, very useful mod that allows you to install mods with ease and with fewer conflicts between those mods.

1. To start, go to http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20629262/Latest/ModLoader.zip
2. Open the zip file that gets downloaded. Inside there are multiple class files.
3. Go to your start menu and open Run. On windows xp there will be an option that says Run. Click that. If you are on Vista or 7, type Run in the search bar and press enter.
4. In the window that pops up, type %appdata%. This will open your file browser.
5. At the top there should be a folder called .minecraft. Open this folder.
6, Go to the folder called bin.
7. Inside will be a file called minecraft.jar, open it using either WinRAR or 7zip,
8. Once you have opened your minecraft.jar delete the folder labeled META-INF. This will remove your ability to play in your browser, but that is the price of using mods.
9. Now, go back to the zip file that you got from downloading ModLoader.
10. Select all the files inside, and drag them into the minecraft.jar, but avoid dragging them into one of the folders inside the minecraft.jar.
11. Start up Minecraft, log in, and now the mod will be activated and it can be used for other mods!

Part 2: Using Modloader in relation to installing mods

Now that Modloader is installed, you can use it to install most mods. This is a very simple process.
1. Repeat steps 1-5.
2. Go to the folder called mods.
3. Place the zip file downloaded with the mod inside this folder, and as a zip file.
4. The mod is installed. Yay!

If Minecraft crashes or has an error after an installing a mod this way, then you can remove the mod by simply deleting the zip from the mods folder.

Part 3: Installing mods that will NOT work with Modloader

There are some mods that will NOT work with Modloader. For these mods, the installation is easy. Just do the same thing that you did to install Modloader, and the mod will be installed!

Part 4: Installing complex mods that will NOT work with Modloader

Some mods require adding additional components that go outside the minecraft.jar, such as sounds. These mods are slightly more complex to install, and will often contain other folders labeled things such as resources.

1. Find the folder inside the downloaded mod that contains class files. Add these files to the minecraft.jar.
2. Go up one folder and find the folder labeled resources. Open this folder.
3. Drag the contents into the resources folder in your .minecraft folder.
4. The mod should be installed now!

NOTE: Some mods may contain very specific instructions as to their installation. If they do, FOLLOW THOSE INSTRUCTIONS, NOT THESE. These instructions are designed for use with a standard mod.

drag or copy. i felt that more people were familiar with the term 'dragging' so i used that.

1. Open the zip file, youve already done that
2. Select ALL the files in the zip. This can be achieved by pressing ctrl+a or by clicking the highest item on the list and then shift-clicking the lowest item.
3. Your minecraft.jar should be open.
4. Hold the left click on the items in the modloader zip, and then while holding the mouse, drag them over to the minecraft.jar which should be open in winrar or 7zip.
5. The files should copy over automatically.

If you have followed those exact steps and are still having trouble, add me in skype as the_basement_nerd, ill help you there

It's something by the creator of optifine, instead of installing mods, you download them, click "add" in the magiclauncher popup, then select the file.
