How to join a server without me hating you

After many months of modding across multiple servers I came to a realization. For the most part I hate people who join the servers I play on.

This isn't to say that every person who comes on is a bad or annoying person, but it does mean that there are some things that I see every time someone joins a server that get extremely annoying.

1. Coming on without saying anything

as a mod I tend to keep an eye out for new people as they join, making sure that they are welcomed into the server and started into becoming a member, though on occasion, especially during busy times of the day, I won't see a new person join. So you can do one of two things, introduce yourself and start chatting with people or sit there or wander around mindlessly and silently.

One of these two things is the wrong thing to do, and I will give you a hint. Ito s the second one.

To begin, being silent will not let us know you are there. I don't regularly check tab to see oh I hope I didn't miss someone. It makes you seem like a creeper, especially if you wander off into the wilderness or peopleo s houses before even saying anything, for most people that is a trigger to keep an eye on you and make sure you are not griefing, especially since most servers have a new player level for people to prevent that.

So you successfully said hello, I am so proud of you. Now leto s say that English isn't your first language, cool I can respect you trying to get on a server to learn a second language easier. People start trying to ask you things to get you going so you decide that since they aren't talking in your language it isn't worth your time.

Yeah, no.

2. Don't assume people will automatically understand what you mean, or that you don't understand.

I have had countless people come on and say some pretty dumb things later to only blame it on not being able to understand the language, and while I can empathize that people will take language for granted, it doesn't give you free reign to be rude. Simply saying when you join the server (in the respective language) I am sorry but (insert language here) is not my first language could you repeat the question, will not only make people slow down but often clarify if needed what they meant. It saves a lot of trouble on both sides

so you decide to start getting to know people. Maybe even make a joke. So you ask to be made admin. hahaha so funny that I forgot to laugh.

3. Don't ask to be given ridiculously large privileges or ask idiotic questions

whether joking or serious it is extremely irritating to have that question come up. so rule of thumb. no you cannot have admin. there was that very difficult? and if a server has creative it often means a separate world for creative, no matter how much you beg, plea, or bug me (which I don't take much of) we will not allow you to build using creative in survival. some servers do have a system where they will give you such benefits if you donate but pay for play is not something most servers will be doing.

and while we are talking about odd demands or questions, demanding the ability to break blocks is the exact thing that makes me never want to give you that ability.

if you do need to ask an idiotic question a simple preface of Io m sorry but, or I am still learning, or this may sound stupid but, let us know that you are actually trying to gain some semblance of knowledge from the questions instead of hurr durr how I mine for fish.

people have started to ask you questions and some of them are starting to repeat, it is getting a bit annoying so you decide to start saying things like, I answered that(fine) or it doesn't matter (hmmm) or worse stop with all these bloody questions(nope.avi)!

4.flipping out over the little things

On my server we do three things before making you a member, we do a background check and address any bans, we ask you where you found our server, and we ask you to read the rules and let us know if you agree. very simple very easy right? not for most people it seems.

a) background check: so a long time ago you got a ban for some griefing you did or maybe it was just an admin banning you for now reason. that's fine but we will check it. best to be up front and explain it when we ask rather than trying to deny or hide things. we understand that things happen and that sometimes a ban is placed on a person for no good reason but when you try to cover it up instead of just coming clean it puts people on edge. in other words, if you have a ban, be honest.

b) where did you find us: For mine we advertise in quite a few places, so not only does it help us figure out what is working and not but also lets us weed out people try to pull the I Google it and this came up. yeah that isn't a good way to find someone, tell us the page the website anything more than just Google. and if you find us through something like reddit we will want to know the exact spot. saying that you don't remember is a big no no, it isn't hard to remember a bloody place you found a server and we expect it to be known, if you seriously don't remember than say that in the first place but make an effort instead of just brushing it off

c) Read the bloody rules: it is so simple, a little command of /rules, something that I have never seen a server not do, and yet people insist on ignoring it. we can check, we will check, and it takes less time to type it in and read the bloody general rules than getting into an argument with the people who are trying to get you started

so you are finally a member, and while it may have been difficult going remembering how to be vaguely polite to people you don't know you somehow made it though without me despising you congratulations.
