Hey PMC!!!

This is my first tutorial, so please don't get really worked up if I didn't explain something clearly, just PM me or comment it!

OK. Now for the tutorial.

I recently made a adventure map in Minecraft, (which, at this point, is not available for download), and I was thinking I would tell you how I did it.

STEP ONE: PLANNING

Create a sketch detailing what you want to do. See the picture up there ^.. (At the top.)You do not need to be really detailed, just a drawing. Like in mine, I drew a castle for a mob arena, a squiggly line for the roller coaster, some pillars for the Roman Parkour, a Sphinx on the path toward the Egyptian boss fight, and a pyramid for the boss fight. All these had paths connecting them. So I didn't have really detailed sketches, just little, well, sketches..

STEP TWO: EXPERIMENT

Step two is experimenting. To make a map you need to experiment withthe redstone you might need to make sure it all works, making some test floors for buildings, and things like that.

STEP THREE: START BUILDING

Pretty self explanatory.. Start buildingyour map. Make sure you follow your sketch(but don'tfollow it exactly, instead of making a free standing roller coater like it looks like in the map, I make it go through mountains, I also added a meadow and a forest going from the mob arena to the roller coaster.)

Remember to add command block for effects such as changing the time of day, teleporting and saying things (the block id is #137)

STEP FOUR: ADD "SPECIAL" THINGS (OPTIONAL)

Add bosses with more health, or make sure some mobs don't despawn. Mobs with armour (if you don't know how to do this, check out this tutorial- http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1415031-12w32a-monster-with-custom-armour-and-weapons-easy/). Things along those lines. If you don't know how to do those, you can have a perfectly good level with out them.

STEP FIVE: BETA TESTING

Ask some of your friends to help you beta test. Make sure all of your redstone is working and that all your command blocks work.)

STEP SIX: UPLOADING (OPTIONAL) (NOT REALLY A PART OF MAKING A GOOD MAP)

Upload your project to Mediafire, Dropbox, etc. When you post it, make it seem fun, but remember to tell the truth, and only the truth. If you just say "I built this map in 5 hours and you should download it because I said so,"

you won't get as many people to download it, but if you write something like "When you open my map, you start in a beautiful city, based off of NYC." you will get people interested and, chances are, more people will download it.

Also get good pictures to accurately show the potential downloader what they are going to be playing on. Don't Photoshop too much, but if you want to have some cool effects, that could get more people to your page.

That's pretty much what you do..

Here are some tips:
  • Guide the player (At any point in Minecraft, the player could wonder off and do their own thing)
  • Clear paths
  • Clean design
  • MCEdit (MCEdit can save a lot of time building. Make a base, then MCEdit it so its taller.)
  • Have more than one area
  • Dense buildings
  • Accent your buildings
  • Do what you think looks the best

You usually need to specify WHO you want the gamemode change to apply to.  I would look it up, depending on what you want.  (How to make a scoreboard in minecraft thru cmd blocks or something.)
