Hey PMC'ers 3D here!
I'm going to be talking about the basics about 'How to make a good Wallpaper'?

I'll be covering:
- What makes a good Wallpaper?
- What makes a bad Wallpaper?
- Positioning
- Best Programs to use

- Examples of good Wallpapers

The key thing about making a good Wallpaper is always Planning what you want to do and know how you can make the plan work. For example, if you're wanting to make a Medieval-themed Wallpaper, you're going to have to think of what type of Font you would like to use or even if you want to put any Text on the Wallpaper or not. You'll also have to think if you would like to have an Image or something that maybe summarizes the Wallpaper: for a Medieval-themed one you might want to add a picture of a Knight or a Castle onto it.

Another good tip is to think of what style you want to make it:

- Simple

I like Simple Wallpapers because they look more effective and they can look really good if you do it well but you can choose whatever you would like.

The final thing on this topic that is worth mentioning is that you need to know how big or small you want the Wallpaper to be. In other words, the resolution.

There are many different Wallpaper sizes. Here are some that you can use:
- 2560x1600
- 1920x1200
- 1920x1080
- 1280x960

There are more than those; this was just a short list.

Here is a diagram to show resolutions:

These are the things you're going to want to avoid:
- Low Quality Pictures/Text
- Messy Layout
- Not being Planned
- Overcrowded with Pictures/Text unless it looks good

You're going to have to think about how you want to position your Images/Text and where your Icons are going to be on your Desktop. Maybe even try putting all your Icons on your Task bar: this will allow you to have a large image for your Wallpaper without any Icons on it. There are different ways you can position objects / where you want objects to be. You don't want all your Icons covering your main Image/Text. That would end up ruining it.

Here are some examples of how you can position things:

Some programs that you can use to make wallpapers (with explanations):

Photoshop - *Get it here*

Adobe Photoshop is a graphics editing program which can cost around £180/$290 and I recommend this to a keen computer art user. I think this is a good program to use because you can do some interesting things: Drop shadow, Glow, Patterns, Bevel, Gradients etc. It's also a good program to use because you can put things perfectly in certain places. For example you can align things: Center(Horizontal/Vertical), Edges(Top/Bottom/Right/Left)

Paint.NET - *Get it here*

Paint.NET is another Graphics editing program which is FREE! I recommend getting this as it's really easy to use. It's sort of like the Windows Paint but has some more little features; it allows transparency etc. I think this is a good program to use however it may not work for making the perfect wallpaper; it could be used to make some objects for the wallpaper like little graphics.

gimp-logopng

GIMP - *Get it here*

GIMP is an Image editing/Image retouching program which is also free. I recommend getting this if you want to add some finishing touches onto your wallpapers because you can get some cool effects with it: Gradients, Light effects etc. It's also a good program to make GIFs; I'm not a pro at making GIFs, but I'm sure you could find a tutorial on the Net!

Um, I dont know if this have been mentioned, but I'd just like to say that Photoshop (any version) is not only a graphics editing program.. Photoshop is very, VERY advanced and can be used for ANYTHING as long as its just a part of the software, and something visual. You can even in the new version (CS6) edit movies in it..
