Would you like to know how to make colored signs and books in Minecraft? Well follow the simple steps below :D

BEDROCK EDITION (Mobile, Console, and Windows 10):

1. Place a sign on the ground (or right click a book).

2. Type "§" (Or copy+paste it)

How to Type "§":

IOS:
1. In your keyboard, tap "123" or "symbol" to go to the numbers and symbols page.
2. Tap and hold the "&" symbol and you will get "§".

ANDROID:
- Hold the S key, and "§" will pop up.

PC (Windows 10 only):
- If you have a numpad, hold Alt, press 2, then 1 on the numpad and release Alt
- If this doesn't work for you, some comments (SonThanhVN and Frogwizard1984) have also mentioned Alt+0167 on the numpad
- If you don't have a numpad, then copy+paste it.

CONSOLE (tested on Nintendo Switch, credit to guygamer57):
- Go into the language settings and scroll all the way down. There, you will find the symbols option. Activating this language will come up with 4 pages of symbols. On page 2, on the bottom row is the special symbol.

3. After you typed "§", tap a number or letter in the table below. Then, type a few letters and you will discover that they have changed color or font!

NOTE: The "§" followed by a number will NOT show on the sign/book when you exit.

Color Codes (stolen from here, not case-sensitive):
§0 - BLACK
§1 - DARK BLUE
§2 - DARK GREEN
§3 - DARK AQUA
§4 - DARK RED
§5 - DARK PURPLE
§6 - GOLD
§7 - GRAY
§8 - DARK GRAY
§9 - INDIGO
§A - GREEN
§B - AQUA
§C - RED
§D - PINK
§E - YELLOW
§F - WHITE
§M - STRIKE THROUGH
§N - UNDERLINED
§L - BOLD
§K - RANDOM (see for yourself)
§O - ITALIC

JAVA EDITION (PC & MAC):

1.8+ (WITH COMMANDS):
Please follow these links for a sign/book generator (it can even produce signs and books that run commands!):
Signs: https://minecraft.tools/en/sign.php
Books: https://minecraft.tools/en/book.php

Explanation: This method uses a JSON formatter to edit the NBT tags of the sign you are giving yourself. This essentially gives you full control of everything the sign can do, from its displayname (Insert ",display:{Name:"{\"text\":\"YOUR SIGN NAME HERE\"}"}" at the end of command to change it) to its color and commands.

Note that you need cheats/command blocks enabled for this to work!

1.14+ (SURVIVAL):
If you didn't know, the Java Edition release of 1.14 added a neat way of changing the colors of signs (in survival mode without cheats!): Simply right click a dye item on a sign that you have placed down. This will change all the text on the sign to the color of the dye you are holding.

Unfortunately, this is only limited to the entire text on the sign, and you cannot change the text style. If you want to edit each individual letter or line, use the commands method above.

NOTE FOR JAVA EDITION SERVERS:
If you are on a Minecraft server which supports colored signs (ask an admin or the owner if you do not know), you may use the color codes described above in the Bedrock edition section. Just remember to replace the "§" with a "&".
