For my single-player Creative town, I wanted a system where the minecarts would 'bounce back' off each train station. So you stand at the train station, wait for the mine cart to arrive, jump in and depart where you wish. No stops, no buttons, no redstone.
And this can be done fairly easily, as I found out.
1. Create your track - as long or as hilly as you like.
2. Where the track ends, place a two-block hill.
3. Flatten the hill by two blocks.
4. At the end of the hill put a wall.
5. Do this the other side.
Set the Minecart off and it will whizz across the track, reach the hill and bounce back again forever!
