First off this is not a tutorial how to setup a texturepack there are enough tutorials for that

Making Realistic Textures

This tutorial shows you some useful tools and other stuff in paint.net

to make a good looking realistic texture pack.

STEPS :

1. Basics

First you have to know which block, which size and what for color

2.Effects or Adjustements

Pick the matching effects or/and adjustements for you texture

(further on more about this)

3.Make the final touches

If some parts of the texture does not look nice change it with the matching tool.

You can also use photos but that is not that difficult.

(usefull)EFFECTS:

Ink/Pencil sketch:

Looks likes it is inked or drawn.

Oil painting:

Looks likes its painted

Bulge:

(works only with more than 1 color) This gives a pulled out 3d look.

Crystalize:

This softens the texture and also devides it in manual scaled cels.

Dents:

It looks like water.

Frosted glass:

It looks a little bit blurry but its gives a good effect.

Polar inversion:

A 3d effect that is ends in the middle.

Tile reflection:

Gives a look like tiles but also looks like crystals.

Twist:

It just gives a 3d twist.

Noise:

Its just som random pixels but this can really help a lot with different textures.

Glow:

It gives it a glow.

Soften/Sharpen:

If some parts of the picture look weird than this can really help.

Clouds:

This is useful for almost anything try it.

Relief:

Gives a good 3d look.

I dont think that your right, its one of the best free editing programs out there and the textures that you can make whit it are really good compared wit those from other free programs.(i will post some pictures later on)

its the standard windows program and wont even start to understand transparency but is easy to draw with so its only downside is transparency....a good program thats free is paintshop pro and it is abit akward to edit the brush size not to blend the colours but is very effective (just need to sort out its pixelation problem)
