In these tutorials I will explain how to create basic mods. I am willing to help people learn how to mod.


Note that no matter how old the tutorial is, what you should learn in the tutorial is how to go abut modding that particular aspect of the game.


Note: MCP only works for the version of Minecraft it is released with. You CANNOT use MCP with a newer or older version of minecraft. For example: MCP 2.6 ONLY works with Minecraft 1.1_02.


Installing A Mod:
  • Firstly download your mod. It will most likely be zipped or as a .rar file, so use a program like 7zip to turn it into a normal file.
  • Inside should be a readme file, read it. They are useful and will either contain installation instructions or other useful information (like mods it requires to work).
  • In general to install it is easy;
    1. Go to your minecraft folder. This can be found by going to "C:Users[USERNAME]AppDataRoaming.minecraft". There is another way wich is to open the game and go to the "mods & texture packs", then "Open folder" and use your native browser to go up a level from that folder. Inside this folder are several more that I'll outline.

  • bin - This is where all the working bits for minecraft are. You don't' generally put things into this folder, but inside is a file called "minecraft" which is the actual game, and IS modded.
  • resources - sometimes mods need additional things that are put in here. The mod should tell you if things need to go here.
  • saves - this is where your worlds are kept, you can copy them out for a backup or drop worlds into here to play them.
  • screenshots - obvious really, any screenshots taken using minecraft's in-game screenshot taker will be saved here.
  • stats - this is where achievements are saved for now.
  • texturepacks - this is where texture packs (and possibly mods in the future) go. You can access this folder through the game itself.
  • options - this file holds your default options. You can do something like get an IP from here if you want.
Navigate to "bin" and "minecraft". This is a Jar file, and so has to be opened by something like 7zip or winRAR by right clicking and opening it as an archive. Inside are a lot of complicated files with names like "hj" and "ys". These can be ignored as they are obfuscated (mixed up) to make it harder to mod.Find all the ".class" files inside your mod and simply drag them into the minecraft archive, overwriting anything that asks.
  • Some files include things like textures that have to be put into the right folder, the structure is fairly easy and whilst your in there you can look at how Notch lays out his textures (and edit them if you want).
Delete the "META-INF" folder. This is important. If it doesn't work and it's because you haven't done this it is ENTIRELY your own fault.The Mod should work now. If not you've probably missed something or it isn't up to date. That is the process for installing most mods, and if they require other work it'll probably be included in the readme (if not the modder is stupid and you probably shouldn't use their mod anyway).Installing Mod Loader:
  1. Download the Modloader file by Risugami.
  2. Extract it (you can't copy into an archive from a zipped file).
  3. Open the miecraft jar (see above for how).
  4. Drag ALL the files into the miecraft jar.
  5. Delete META-INF (if it is there).
  • This Mod doesn't add anything to the game, but a lot of other mods use it as a way of modding without changing the files directly. This helps if you have two mods that change the same .class file, as one would overwrite things the other needs that just happen to be in the same file. If a mod requires modloader it MUST have it, but most other mods will work with modloader even if they don't need it.
Installing AudioMod:
  1. Download the AudioMod file by Risugami.
  2. Extract it (you can't copy from a zipped file).
  3. Open the minecraft jar (see the first section for how to do this).
  4. Drag the "yf" file into the main section of the minecraft archive.
  5. Drag the entire 'ibxm' folder into the minecraft archive.
  6. In the mod folder open the paulscode folder, then the sound golder, then the codecs folder until you are looking at a file called "CodecIBXM".
  7. In the minecraft jar open the 'paulscode', 'sound' and 'codecs' folders so you can see two .class files called "codecWav" and "CodecJOrbis".
  8. Drag the "CodecIBXM" into the minecraft archive at the codecs folder.
  • Steps 6 through 8 can be simplified by dragging the "paulscode" file from the mod folder into the minecraft archive, but sometimes it doesn't add it properly so this method is foolproof, you can use either generally.
Delete "META-INF" if it is there.
  • This mod also doesn't add functionality, but it allows mods to place custom sounds in the game. It also allows YOU to add custom sounds.

Why would you post a thread on how to mod a game when you have not created a single mod yourself

1. I dont mod, My brother mods and he had written this from scratch, But because he dident have his own account at the time, He Posted it on mine.

2. This is old, And i play some time later this month to go through deleting thing that i dont realy want on my account any more, This is one of them
