If you don't have time to read the entire tutorial, skip to the end where I give all the tips in as few sentences as I can!

Any good PVPer knows that any armor is better than no armor. If you have any armor, it's better to wear it now than later.
Ranks of defence (armor):
No armor

This is especially helpful in the Survival Games!

A very important and very, VERY helpful tip is to always perform critical hits on players and mobs. This can be achieved by holding the space bar while hitting at your enemy or jumping from a height and hitting your enemy. Critical hits do up to 50% more plus 1 hearts worth of damage and have star particles emanating from the weapon. Using a bow (fully charged) will do 10 hearts damage to the enemy is correctly shot at. Critical hits look like the title picture (exclude the text).

Dodging is also very important as well. Always walk in "off" patterns to avoid getting hit by swords and arrows. This tip can also be used in the Survival Games.

Sprint striking is running and jumping at your enemy that does a critical hit on them as well as knocking them back. This is very useful if someone is chasing you and you have the chance to strike back! This is recommended when you have a substantial amount of hunger as sprinting lowers your hunger.

This tip may not always work but lowering your difficulty to Peaceful may slow down the degration of hunger = more sprint strikes.

Some other helpful pointers!
When escaping your enemy, never look back! This gives a chance for you enemy to kill you. If you want to see your enemy, press F5 (function key on your keyboard) twice!

Enchant whenever possible! Enchanting your armor is very helpful and increases damage dealt and reduces damage from hits.

Have a sword in your hotbar at all times! If you don't have a weapon, use your fist! It does more damage than holding a block! If you don't have a sword but have a other tools use them! Axe is th next best with, pickaxe, then hoe (which does about the same damage as a fist does).

Survival Games Tips!
Always go for the center! If other people have already taken the stuff in the chests, run away from the center! If you happen to get lucky and get a sword, you may kill 1 or 2 people before running away. If it's too risky, run away! Preserve your hunger bar and run when you are being chased! Always look around for enemies! Get to all the houses quickly and get the loot! If you are able to, stay nearby the center until dark, the chests will restock with items. If you aren't nearby the center, nab any chests you find around midnight or camp around chests. Avoid fall damage and mobs! It's not recommended that you hid in a place for long since chests restock and you may not always have the element of surprise with you (you have a stone sword vs. a person with iron full set and diamond sword). Crouch to hide your name!

The Bottom Line
Always jump when attacking and sprint against them to knock them back!
Walk in "off" patterns to avoid getting hit!
Wield weapons in your hotbar at all times and equip armor as soon as you get it!
Never look back when someone is chasing you!
Preserve your hunger bar to run away or perform sprint strikes!

Hopefully these tips helped you become a better PVPer!
Thanks for reading it!

ehh, your fist does excactly the same amount of damage as holding any other item (like a block of dirt or a feather!)

Have you tested that before? This also works for tools as well. You will punch a piece of wood faster by hand than by a pick.

yep me and a few friends tested the hand damage and it does a little more than a block or item.
