Let's get started with reducing lag on Minecraft!
Please note that with more FPS, there might be slight or lots of screen tearing.
You can enable VSync to get rid of it if you have any major problems.
I'm assuming that:
- You know how to open menus in Minecraft
- You can perform basic maintenence on your laptop/desktop
- You can install basic mods
Step 1: Changing Basic Settings
Changing basic settings can greatly decrease you Minecraft lag. Try changing these very simple settings and see if it helps! To acess these settings, go to the main menu, click on the box labeled Options. then click Video Settings and go from there!
Graphics: Turn them to Fast, instead of Fancy.
Fast - lower quality, faster
Fancy - higher quality, slower
Note: Changing your graphics from fast to fancy or fancy to fast will change: appearance of clouds ; leaves ; water ; shadows ; and grass sides.
Smooth Lighting: Turn it Off instead of Minimum or Maximum.
Off - no smooth lighting, faster
Minimum - simple smooth lighting, slower
Maximum - complex smooth lighting, slowest
Note: Changing the smooth lighting setting will make your game look better, or worse.
3D Anaglyph: You can change this to your preferred setting.
On - makes Minecraft 3D
Off - regular view
Note: In order for Minecraft to be 3D when this setting is on, you must use 3D glasses.
GUI Scale: Smaller GUI might be faster.
Small - smallest GUI
Normal - larger GUI
Large - even larger GUI
Auto - largest GUI
Note: Changing the GUI scale makes your menu, hotbar, and inventory look smaller or larger.
Brightness: You can change this to your preferred setting.
Moody - minimum brightness level
Bright - maximum brightness level
Note: Changing brightness level will determine how bright the lighting is in your world.
Render Distance: Render distance determines how far you can see in your world.
2 chunks - tiny, fastest
4 chunks - short, faster
8 chunks - normal
16 chunks - far, slower
32 chunks - extreme, slowest
Note: Render distance greatly affects your performance.
Max Framerate: Change this to unlimited for best performance.
10 tp 250 - variable
Unlimited - no limit, fastest
Note: The framerate limit decreases even if the limit value isn't reached.
Step 2: Changing Other Video Settings
Use VSync: Off
Entity Shadows:Off
Alternate Blocks: On
Particles: Minimal
View Bobbing: Preference
Use VBOs: Off
Fullscreen: Preference
Clouds: Off
Mipmap Levels: 4
Step 3: Difficulty
Difficulty matters! Hard mode spawns lots of mobs, therefore creating more lag. The lower level the difficulty is on, the less laggy it will be.
Peaceful - no mobs, fastest
Easy - less mobs, faster
Normal - more mobs, slower
Hard - most mobs, slowest
Step 4: TNT and Redstone
Try not to create big redstone contraptions. These humongous things cause lots of lag. Also, try not to make too many TNTs explode at the same time. This will also cause Minecraft to lag out.
Step 5: Other Tips
- Turn off Aero effects on PCs
- Allocate more RAM to Minecraft
Step 6: Resource Packs
If you use a resource pack, try to keep it simple.( Use a 16x16 or 32x32 or lower for best performance)
Step 7: Optifine
Optifine allows you to make even more changes for less lag!
