What is Pex?

Pex is a permissions plugin, Im sure you already know that.

But Pex is a lot different from other permissions plugins.

How to start!

With Pex you can setup everything in 2 different ways, you can either set up permissions in-game, or in the permissions.yml. This tutorial will show you how to set up in-game.

How to set up in-game!

Before we start, you need to give yourself permission to edit groups and their permissions! So in console, go ahead and type the following command:

/Pex group Owner create

The above command will create the group Owner. If you dont want to use that name for the group, then just use another name. After the group is created, you have one more command to do:

/Pex group owner add permissions.*

The above command just gave the Owner group permissions to edit groups and add/remove permissions. Now we can start creating groups!

First off, we should make the default rank. Name it whatever you want to! If you dont want to use Member, just type what you want to name it. To do that, go ahead and type:

/Pex group Member create

That just made your default rank! To start adding permissions, you first need to get the permissions you want to add. Like essentials.msg or essentials.me. The following link shows all the permissions nodes for essentials:http://www.planetminecraft.com/account/manage/blogs/item/new/. Now that you have permission nodes, time to start adding them to the groups!

/Pex group member add

I know this may seem silly, but NO you do not need the bracket things. Once you have all of the permissions that you would like to have for that group, we need to set it to default, add prefixes, and set the chat color for the group! To set the group to default, type the following command:

/Pex set default group

Now when new users join, they should automatically be ranked to that group!

The group now has been set to default, permissions have been added, now all we need to do is set the prefix! NOTE: If you want the group to have a certain chat color, like everyone in the group talks in grey.... Ignore this part! I will show you how to set it with Essentials. To set the groups prefix, type the following command!

/Pex group prefix

Now that group should have the prefix before their name. So it should finally be complete! If you wanted to set the groups prefix and chat color with Essentials, then go into your essentials config. Scroll down about 2/3 of the way and find the part that says EssentialsChat. Once youre there, under the group formats section, go down a line and hit space 4 times. If your groups name is Member and you want them to have light grey chat, your section should look like the below. Im sorry for the poor explanation of this, its kinda hard to explain.

Member: '&7[Doi] {DISPLAYNAME}: {MESSAGE}'

Below is my EssentialsChatsection for some help c;

mjfgixlkt

Once you complete the chat section, your default rank is complete! If you want to make more groups such as donor groups or Mod and Admin, do the above exactly the same! NOTE: You dont need to include permissions from the default rank! You can set permission inheritance using the following command:

/Pex group parents set

Congratulations! Your groups are complete :3

PermissionsEx is a very easy plugin to break. Try reinstalling the plugin completely and doing the commands again.

This is happening to me too. Do I seriously have to do this? *Stares at crazy-long incomplete permissions.yml file*

To be honest, I can't really help with that. Pex is extremely easy to break. Hell, I still break it from time to time. It's broken on me right now on a new network I'm working on. Your best bet is just to get the latest version and update, or try downgrading to a stable version. I've noticed that if you have a permissions.yml already saved, and you edit it and save it again. It can even break the plugin. Doing everything with commands seems to be the most stable way of doing things, but it is very tiresome as it takes up a lot of time. Best of luck.
