How to Start a Server

Have you wondered how servers get so great? Have you also wondered how to get and make a server that's even greater? Well you came to the right place, because with my knowledge, I can lead you to the path of greatness with your server.

Making a server

Making a server, may sound easy. It is definitely not. In this step you may need to have money in a paypal. To make a server you can do 2 things. One you can make your own server which isn't too hard, but your server will be full of lag, because it's running off of your computer. If you decide to make one from scratch then it won't be 24/7. This is a bad thing, because if there are going to be players on all the time then it needs to be 24/7. If you have no clue of how to make a server from scratch and you really want to, then here's a link to teach you how --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d04mtt5pGhg. Now, the second, and most chosen way for making a minecraft server is to use a host. Getting a host will have many perks to it, but many cons. With a host it is easier to add the plugins you want, and to make the server 24/7 (depending on the host). Hosts provide you with a server. But one of the cons of getting a host is that they will cost money, unless you want a trial. But don;t worry! Some hosts are super cheap and offer great stuff. If you have money ready, don't spend all of the money on a big server! Start out small, so you can have money to pay monthly. If you buy a big server then you will have wasted your money on many slots that you don't need. Wait till you get donations, or a sponsorship to upgrade your server. Once you have a server you can start building it up.

Building up a server

Once you have your server it's time to install some plugins. If you have no clue what plugins to get then I suggest going to Bukkit.org. There you can search and browse for plugins you may need or want. But don't overload your server with plugins. This may cause major lag. I suggest getting some key plugins first, such as all of the essentials, world edit, worldguard, and your choice of a permissions plugin. I suggest permissionsEx or group manager. Once you have some base plugins, then I would start configuring them if they need it. If you don't know how to configure, then I would post in the forums here asking for someone who knows how. Once you have all your plugins settled out, then start building a spawn for your new players. If you are terrible at building, like me, then search for a pre built spawn. I would suggest searching here! Planetminecraft has very talented people that build amazingly. Once you upload that world file then I would start laying it out with info, and claiming it. You can claim with worldGuad+WorldEdit, by slecting your spawn and typing in /region define . Then type /rg flag pvp deny and so on.

Hiring Staff

Once you think you have everything settled out, I would hire a few staff people to help out around the server when you are not there. I would create a forums, also. I suggest using enjin.com or proboards to create your forums. You can customize your forums to whatever you want. After you customize, create an application within the forums for the people to fill out so you can find the perfect people for your server. Also, don't be afraid to be strict with applications and your staff, this makes sure you have the best staff possible. Make sure you chat with them to gain there trust and learn about them, before you hire them. Once you have a good staff team then it's time to advertise. Planetminecraft is a perfect place to post your new server in the Servers tab. Make sure you have a great description. Watch out for griefers and hackers, too.

Don't forget to keep updating your server and stay active. I hope this helps everyone wanting to make a server and Questions can be commented!
