This isn't really a rant, but I'm gonna take a shot and express myself in these ways. This is for Beta/Alpha players such as myself.
Now, when I first started my first world in early early beta, I walked, and found trees. I started to punch them with my fist, and soon I got some basic crafting. I had known a small bit about the crafting in this game, and to be honest, I was surprised I had successfully crafted those crappy wood tools. As the night fell, I (Feeling terrified) hid in a cave, listening to all the Hell going on deep inside and outside the cave. I was scared, to say the least.
Now, the sight of a skeleton, zombie, spider, or creeper do not scare me. I feel cocky and confident. I chopped down a birch tree, got oak planks (You'll know why if you played early on), and built a derpily-lighted house.
Minecraft started to "slip" from its happy, old self a LOT around 1.5, and maybe 1.4, and of course it's not the MC we know and love today. On old Minecraft, there isn't colored wood (shocking), there aren't horses (awful), and you can't sprint (how HORRIBLE).
I personally think Minecraft was a happy and fun game full of peace love and originality, and then everything got too good for it, if you feel me. Now there's frickin HORSES running around, and squidward-looking fucks that make weird sounds. It's like another game (Even though villagers have existed for quite awhile, they still make that derpy sound).
Instead of changing to Alpha and Beta modes to solve your nostalgia, and then break your game with old lighting and textures, I think there should be an option for the old modes, not you breaking your game for it. Does anyone else agree?
This is a tiny story based on what I think most of the time, just because I miss old Minecraft. Please diamond if you like, and thanks for viewing!
