Interview with Darastlix


 


So how did you find Minecraft?


It was 5 years ago, a friend told me about minecraft and I decided to try it myself.


What do you think of Minecraft?


I think of minecraft as something far more than just a game, it's a modern way to create art, other games will be forgotten but people won't stop playing minecraft for decades. It's similar to lego, but without limitations.


What is your favourite thing to do in Minecraft?


Build things! Especially design terrains and locations!


What got you into building terrains and what inspires you?


All my inspirations come directly from nature, films and from other projects. There are many beautiful places on Earth that can inspire you. For example floating islands in Avatar film were inspired by Zhangjiajie.


Why did you first start to make maps?


I first started to make maps for small private servers where I was playing with my friends.


What enjoyment do you get from making maps?


Much enjoyment when I manage to create something amazingly beautiful and a bit of frustration when I fail.


Why have you stayed playing Minecraft after all these years?


I'm not playing survival Minecraft as the majority of people do. Survival became a little boring for me.  If I am playing Minecraft, then I'm probably building something in creative or searching for faults in my projects. Or recording a movie :) All in all, I play minecraft because it is the best way to create new art and have fun at the same time.


What do you do in your spare time when you’re not creating terrains? Do you ever create little projects for yourself?


In my free time I'm usually creating tabletop RPG systems, making VFX (special effects) or coding something (I'm also a programmer). I often create little projects to improve my skills.


So because you’re a programmer, have you ever made any mods?


No I don't, but I would like to create some mods in the future. Maybe even a program, that lets you create more advanced terrain (very ambitious plan). I want to make a program that lets you sculpt terrain in 3D like in ZBrush


So like WorldPainter or MCEdit?


They are very different programs. I don't think that you can use MCEdit to create decent maps. On the other hand, not everything can be created in WorldPainter, this is why I'm using more advanced program - World Machine.


What do you think of the World designer programs like MCEdit, WorldPainter & World Machine?


But all of them lack one feature - 3D terrain. You can create 3D terrain in worldpainter, but it is too time consuming.


And lastly, If you could use one word to describe Minecraft and its community what word would you use?

Life.
