"But Vanilla," I hear you cry, "Herobrine's not real!" Stop crying and I'll explain. Right, Herobrine is (probably) not real. Therefore, if you go by that, he can't be good or evil. All you boring people who go by that can just stop reading and go away. All you interesting people who're not sure can continue reading.

1. Why is Herobrine considered evil?
Theory One: "Because He killed Steve."   Ah, I see, Herobrine (who is considered dead) killed Steve, who is alive. Much sense no make. Well, so much for Theory One.
Theory Two: "He died and came back to life evil."   Why?   "Ummm, because the undead are always bad?"   How many times have you, the player, respawned? Well, so much for Theory Two.

2. What does Herobrine Do?
One thingy Herobrine is known for doing is "strip mining" which makes sense since he is often seen as a dead miner. Strip mining, obviously, isn't evil. Most of us have done it at some point or another in our Minecraft life. In a way this almost makes Herobrine even less evil, He's not stealing diamonds, he's mining for them, doing things in a legit way.

3. Mods vs Reality:
Mods (created by the Player) : Herobrine hunts the Player.
Reality (umm, created by reality?) : Herobrine simply stalks the Player.
Look at it this way: In "Herobrine sightings" Herobrine is described as following the Player, and vanishing when approached. As if he's a Player who is no longer alive, making no direct contact with anyone, as if he's watching the Player live the life he no longer has. Creepy? Definantly. Sad? Yes. Evil? No, not really.

See what I'm getting at? Everyone write Herobrine Stories based on Mods, not actual sightings. Why? Read his name, Herobrine. Hero . . . Heroes are good, yes? Why can't you write a story about Him as the Hero instead of the Villain? Anyway, that's about it. Nothing more to say, unless you think of something (*cough*, *cough*, comment) I hope I've changed your opinion, or maybe you just didn't read it at all. Bye :)

Yeah that does make a lot of sense and also in a lot of the sightings I’ve read and seen he asks for help, usually from entity 303, who is truly evil. Makes sense.

You know... This might be weird, but I kinda wish Herobrine was real. It would be kind of annoying if he always showed up, because he destroys things and carves tunnels, but maybe they could add him in only if certain things were true. Like, he would appear in your world if you used a certain seed, or world name, or both.

Is that weird? I don't know. Whatever.

I'd have to disagree, Herobrine breaks into players' worlds and vandalizes the terrain. As well as that, Notch himself has stated on Twitter as a joke that Herobrine gains "spooky vengeance haunting power" over players, and if you ignore him, he leaves. He also stated that Herobrine is a "Morally dubious ghost with a god complex", he wishes to rise up from the ghost he is and rule all of Minecraft. While it doesn't sound evil, in the original Brocraft stream, Herobrine scares Copeland off, forcing him to accidentally fall into lava as he watches over him. And even in the original story, he blackmails the author on the forums into not mentioning his existence (something he really doesn't care about these days). Plus, the original story could've been one of his earlier invasions.

I have, and always will see Herobrine as evil.

(WARNING: VERY LONG POST) I like the idea of Herobrine having a good side to him. In fact, I am writing a graphic novel (soon available on Deviantart) called The Rise of Shadows, where this is just the case. He is evil at first, but his kinder side is revealed. The basics: Long ago, Herobrine was inprisoned deep withing the bowels of a cave, and turned to stone. However, many years later, a new threat bubbled deep within the surface of the Earth. The forces of Null and Entity 303 were rising, growing stronger by each passing day. Defenses were sent to stop this, but they either returned dying and scarred, or didn't return at all. Their only hope was a secret weapon... Perhaps a power forgotten long ago, deep withing the elder stones... They needed someone as powerful as Herobrine as their ally. But would he agree to such a task? Herobrine was freed from his stoney prison. Little did he know that he, Steve, and Alex would embark on a perilous journey to save life as they know it. However, throughout their travels, Herobrine would be hesitant and resistant to protect the two, especially with the constant arguing he and Steve would go through. Herobrine would despise the very idea of it, and perhaps even leave them to fend for themselves in the face of danger. However, he finds himself hesitant to leave, and risks his life multiple times for their survival. Would he be willing to sacrifice himself for the place that costed him his freedom?
Anyway, yes I like the aspect of Herorbrine having a bit of a good side to him.

Finally Someone who thinks Herobrine could be good. I've never thought of him as evil, and even in stories I can't portray him as bad. He's always either a character who helps on the side, is a main character, or joins the party of main characters. I think if the player couldn't respawn he would defend them, and thats why he's watching them.

I personally believe in Herobrine, and I agree with your theory. In several reports of ghostly encounters from real life, they simply seem sad, and avoid direct contact, similar to Herobrine. I do however, believe that there may be other creatures in minecraft that are "Evil" for I encountered traps in my favorite survival world once. And, just to brag, in my favorite survival world, I lived in a pirate ship, the bottom deck was loaded with gold blocks and lapis blocks, I had 2 iron golem crewmates, both of which died. One went into my portal, the other sunk to the bottom of the ocean.
