There are many views, wether Minecraft is addictive or not. Here are some views.

"It can take a lot of time and attention to accomplish a goal you have in mind
You can get distracted easily while exploring
It is a lot of fun to play

Your attention on the game can go on for hours as you don't really notice time going by as you play. You want to finish your goals of collecting resources or building something, but the time involved in doing these can be significant. If you are the sort of person who gets irritated by a project which is left unfinished, you might be irritated by playing the game for only a half hour before going on to something important. You have fun spending 4 hours building a cool looking building but the game will permit you to have sustained focus during those 4 hours. By what you are telling me, you are concerned that you might need those 4 hours doing other things. The way this game is set up, you have reason to be concerned."

Ot the other hand:

"Minecraft is, as you probably know, an indie (independent) game. It focuses on mainly trying to survive and prosper. Monsters come out of the night and in caves (via a mob spawner) and try to kill the player. A list of some of those monsters are zombies, skeletons, creepers, and spiders. While there is no blood, people can upload "texture packs" that make some of those creatures look like they are bleeding. The monsters are different and varried. The only original monsters I have incountered are Pigmen, a mob that does not attack until attacked, and a creeper, a monster that, unlike other mobs, does not make a sound when following you. They "creep" up near you and they make thier only sound "sssss..." and explode. The only questionable thing in it to me is that there is a "Hell" in MC called the "Nether". In it are demons, ghosts, and pigmen. In the nether, at random times loud screaming sounds can be heard. The only way to get there, however, is to build a portal. You must mine an immence amount of obsidian (one of the hardest substances in the game) to build it. Overall, this game deserves a 5 out of 5."

Please post your views below. As the site is called Planet Minecraft I am guessing that the general views will go more towards Minecraft being a not very addictive game, but please be honest, do you spend hours of time on it? And please no comments saying "you suck! Minecraft is awesome" because I have 2 viewpoints as you can see above and I'm not being biased in any way at all.

I just think it's so addicting because there is so much to do, and when you are trying to accomplish a hard task, you become addicted to completing that task. Then you move on to the next.

Also you never finish the task you go set out to do, like if you're going out to collect some wood and theres loads of cows it turns into a killing spree, then you make armor with leather, then at night you kill loads of mobs as you have new armor and you get bone from killing skelentons then turn it into bonemeal and make a farm but need seeds, so you hit some grass but you need water for the farm, so you go mining for iron to make a bucket then find water and make the farm but you need fences to go around the farm so you then remember that you needed to get wood in the first place. Normal circumstance but maybe taken a bit too far. :)

You don't have to have dirt in your inventory to make a farm, just dig out lines in a flat area, hoe the soil, place the seeds then place water in the dug out lines, and for the second question... live in a cave!
