Jeanne pulled on her sneakers and a ratty hand me down jacket and snuck outside. There was going to be a lunar eclipse that night and she was excited to see what it would be like. She crunched through the day-old snow and her heaving breaths crystalized in icy clouds that were swept away by the frigid wind. She looked up at the rapidly dimming moon and smiled. It was nice to be by herself for awhile. Outside with the universe, no distractions, no annoying siblings, just Jeanne. The moon was over half covered by now and she could barely see the world around her. The snow helped, but it was still darker than normal. She waited for a half hour out there, standing in the cold, gazing at the moon as it slowly disappeared. It was beautiful. Finally there was just a tiny bead of light left in the sky. She started silently counting down, waiting till it was a dark circle of dusty orange hanging in the sky. “Three, two, one…” She gazed at the moon. The unappreciated little brother to the sun. The one who reflected their sibling’s every move, every glimmer of light- and was still winked out by someone else's shadow.
I love the moon because it reminds me of myself. I may not shine as brightly as my sis, but I’m still here. Always. I’m just hiding, out of sight. Always trying to be good enough. But I’m not, and so my light will be covered, just like my friend, the moon.
