hello! This is a tutorial on how to make smooth, magical, rainbow hair (or multicolored hair in general)
feel free to use any of the colors, but please credit me if you do.
let's start!

i've made a pre-shaded base for the purposes of this tutorial. I think making a base for rainbow hair makes it a lot easier, since
you only have to focus on the colors and blending.

step one: pick your colors! i recommend using 8, but less or more will work just fine!
here are the colors i used:

step 2: map out where on the head to put the colors
draw a map on the skin or computer so you know where the colors will be placed, and where they'll intersect.
here's mine:

step 3: block in the colors (put them where they go, but don't blend)
the only place where you shouldn't put them is in the gray areas i have circled.

step 4: It's BLENDING TIME
use the eyedropper to select a midtone of one of the colors

then, find where you adjust the opacity of the color (if it's clear or solid) and set it to about half.

then, put it on the seam between the two colors. if it's not completely blended, set it to about 1/4 and put it on the spots that need a touch up.
see! much smoother.

and remember, if the colors are similar enough, they might not need blending. a good example is orange and yellow.

do these steps all the way around until you're happy with the result.

here's mine:

step 5: the top and bottom of the head.

fill these in in a pinwheel-like style

next, blend with the opacity settings like in step 4. here's mine finished.

whee!! the head is done.
step 6: filling in and blending the shoulders.
make another map to figure out where the colors go, and then block them in.

good! next, blend the colors together through the opacity method again. it should look something like this:

whoop! these are the final head and shoulders:

step 7: hair in the front.
for the hair in the front, use the dominant color on the face.

then, map out the shape of the hair with one color.

shade the hair as you normally would, as if it wasn't rainbow at all.

yay! but you aren't done yet.
pick midtones from the sides of the face

set your brush to a little over halfway opacity

and brush over the top of the hair

it will give it a gradient effect that is low effort but looks nice.

step 8: hair in the back.
make yet another map of the hair, and then shade it

sorry, i forgot to take a picture of the plain shading (• <•)
then, block in the colors as usual

once again, blend using middle-opacity until you are happy with it

yay! amost done
step 9: bangs
draw the shape of the bangs

then, shade with one color (forgot to take a picture again)
mORE BLOCKING!

after that, blend the colors of the bangs

and you're done!

here are the final results:

thank you for reading my tutorial, and maybe leave a diamond if it helped you out!
much love,
kaho <3

Bless you for this. Rainbow is my weakness and all previous rainbow/ombre was done by hand and with my newer shading, it's impossible so this helps tremendously.
Although I didn't learn anything new, this is a pretty good tutorial for those who need it :D !
