I'd like to talk to you guys about stealing and copying. It's a big issue among anyone who makes successful things. It's the reason why some people refuse to put out a download link because there are people who steal and copy it, which ruins it for everyone.

Well why is it bad?
Well it is wrong morally because you are taking someone else's work and saying that it is your own. The original person put hard work into it for it, while the copier barely does anything to it. Also the copier may even be more popular and take away from the original to make them seem like the knockoff. A famous case of this is Oreo and Hydrox cookies(Oreo is a copy of Hydrox). Also usually people who copy don't give credit to the original creator so they don't even benefit from it even thought they made it!

Modifying it does not make it yours!
This is commonly technique used to circumvent being too obviously copied. Let me show you an example of someone who copied my Patrol Boat and uploaded back onto Planet Minecraft(no credit given to me)

The one on the right is mine and the one on the left is their modified version of mine. As the original creator of the boat, I immediately recognized it as mine and I imported my boat for comparison as seen in the pic.
Well let's take a look at what they did: change the color, added another mast, added a helicopter pad, but still it's not that different from mine. Doing all that work to cover up what they stole, just to avoid giving credit.

Guys I'm usually fine with people including my work in your projects, but you need to give me credit and at least diamond the project if you are going to use it. Always ASK before. The only time you don't need to ask if you are just using it for personal purposes and not uploading it to PMC as your own.

There was another case where a person actually PM'ed me, gave me credit, but uploaded one of my planes built in MCPE before asking permission. This is a big no no. Always ask first not later. After refusing, it was reuploaded to PMC again saying he made it and cursed at me. He claimed the wings were modified, but I barely even saw a difference.

I just wanted to let you guys know that this is a big issue. These are the works that I only noticed, but the scary thing is that there are must be more projects that have not been caught.

For you guys who likes memes this pretty much sums it up.
meme

So if you see something stolen, please report it and please don't diamond it!

I was just looking through your user and I found this. Even though I don't upload projects I am thinking of doing it at some point and if I do every copy anything I always ask whoever owns the thing I want to copy. For instance earlier I was building something and I was looking around on PMC for ideas and I found a nice ship on PMC and even though I was only going to take the hull I still asked the original builder and got a response saying that I could go ahead instantly. It's so easy to ask that I don't know why people don't just do it!

Reasons why I build far far far away from others in a public server.

I remember a time where I discovered someone had copied my semi truck on a different class server and did a horrible job at doing so too. The truck itself was the same length but a few details were screwed up (Lack of interior, bed placed on the roof). The trailer was the best part, it was at least 10 blocks shorter in length, a block shorter in width and a bit rounder.

I feel bad cause the server I own atm used one of his shinkansen trains he built for about 2-3 years straight (He didn't get any credit although now he does because he commented on mi server claiming the train was his.) It's been there for like forever and I never knew who built it.

I had my stuff stolen many times ...... there was one guy from reddit who isnt on PMC but he made a pretty sweet copy of my yacht reddiit post it and I wasnt even mad ....... while Im not a person who cares about such matter... I do agree that not giving credit to original artist only makes you a person who lacks imagination and ideas ...... and such douchebags never get anywhere :D

I would also like to remind ppl that "inspiration" doesn't mean you should change colors or add few modifications ....even tho I cant resist is when something feels so nice :PPP

I agree, we should discourage plagiarism, and be sure to allows give credit where it's due. But we should also be aware that once we've posted and uploaded our work, that it's out there and anyone who doesn't care can, and will, disregard our rules and do whatever they want with it.

If it bothers you, then you should contact (via PM) them and ask them to either remove it or give you credit. If they refuse and you still want to pursue it, then contact a site moderator and PM them all them they facts (including links to your original project, the offending project, and your conversation with the copier).

Finally, I think it's important to remember that if you've built something based on someone else's original work (like the Millennium Falcon), that you don't really have any true right to that work once you've willingly shared it with everyone. Most people (including myself) will agree that you should receive credit, but in the end, you yourself can't enforce that.
For example, I built a shuttle based on a shuttle seen in Battlestar Galactica. Another builder on PMC posted this photo in one of their projects without giving me any credit for what was (to me) obviously my project. The builder had taken my work and modified it to look more like the original shuttle. I think he still should have given me credit, but I don't own any of the projects elements (not even the basic design), so I chose to just let it go (especially since it wasn't even the main focus of the build, just one of a few shuttle in a nicely made hangar).

Yea it kinda is a bummer that you can't really have any rights to minecraft works. If someone uploaded to Youtube instead of PMC of your work with no credit, you can't do much to prevent that from happening. I've seen people say their work is copyrighted, but I'm not don't think it does anything.
I had this happen to me just earlier last month or so. One of my ship schematics (the Stormcloud class ship) was literally copied and pasted from my Minecraft Schematics profile and uploaded here.

The thing is, the plagiarizer was somehow stupid enough (yes there really ARE people who are THAT stupid) to keep the schematic's original name and description, as well as even reuse the same screenshots from MCS.

Hence, every once in a while, you should search the projects section by typing in the title of your works just to see if anything has been so blatantly plagiarized. It sounds silly, but it can still happen nonetheless.

I completely agree with you, Foxe. I like including other people's builds into my project, but I make sure to give all the proper credit to them. When someone uses someone else's work and doesn't reward them their proper credit, that person is being robbed of feedback and support.

I have had somebody post one of my ships here twice, unfortunately.

A good plan to make sure plagiarized things are yours (if they post a download) is to place signs at random places saying your username and a date, and another thing I do is in my worldsave files I have started placing a text file with credits to me and link to the place it was posted here.

thats why sometimes i don't post a lot of pictures of my planes.. i found my plane in someones build yard and they claimed it was theirs.. they only changed 1-5 blocks on it, and re-colour it too
I guess I have always wondered why people claim other's work as their own? I build because I feel accomplished at the end. I am certain many if not all builders say "... did I really just build this?" or "Where in the blazes did that thing come from?" at some point. And that is such a great feeling and reward in its own right to builders, myself included (as well as the anticipation of the next build and improvements that can be made). When someone simply copies and claim-steals work, I fail to see the joy out of it. They did not get to experience that "aha!" moment of starting and working through a project. Nor did they get the incredibly rewarding satisfaction of completing a build and the mind-to-matter transition the build underwent.

Also, there is no pride in copy/stealing. No pride in saying that this build/thing is a genuine product of my mind. I am not advocating from not taking tips and tricks from other builders or the fair usage of builds. One of the great things of PMC is that you can browse numerous projects and take in all these different build ideas and tricks, yet you can truly make them your own and that you can download the builds to really study those techniques. I see no need for copying and pasting work on any level (If it is just for views and diamonds, well that seems fairly petty). This applies to all aspects of life, not just on PMC. That is why some schools will expel you if you are caught plagiarizing and why copyright and fair use laws exist. Stealing work is not cool. You were born with a brain, why not use it to its fullest potential?

As stated before as well as is stated in this blog, I am all for fair usage/idea sharing. If a server wants to use the build, I would say go right ahead with the proper crediting (via a sign or whatnot). Personal usage is cool too. As is taking aspects and ideas of a build and incorporating them into your own building palate (I have done this numerous times, yet I consider my structures unique, and so do the mods for that matter lol). But to blatantly copy and submit other's work (plagarism is intellectual robbery) as your own is a no-go for me.

Thanks for writing this CraftyFoxe! Diamond for you! Hope this essay comment is a fair analysis to say and not too long for you hehe

Hehe, it's not too long, I read every word. Yes I agree, I think that some people don't care if they made it or not because they get a good feeling when unaware people compliment them and give them props. Thanks for commenting!
The problem is that your builds are so well made that it's difficult to not being inspired!

I think inspired is different from literally taking my creation, modifying it slightly and uploading it. Thanks for saying they're well made, but I have seen many many designs on servers or on PMC that don't take away from me.
That's certain that just modifying the color and adding some blocks it's not the same that watching a creation and trying to make your own.
