Overview:For centuries London has been one of the greatest City's known to man. It has inspired many in the arts, and has been home to some of the worlds most grand architecture for years. London is Europe's largest City, by size, and population. Some feel London is too crowded, while some love and endure the cosmopolitan chaos! Since London's founding as 'Londinium' by the Romans in 43A.D., it has been a focal point in Construction for Britain. Today, London boasts [debate-ably] more range in Architecture than any other City on earth. Why? Because it offers everything from the modern giant Skyscrapers, to the medieval Castle [The Tower of London], and so on.
BUT...
Is London's Old Architecture being threatened by these new colossal skyscrapers and office landmarks?
The New:
Many new projects are being constructed throughout the whole of London and its 32 boroughs. The City has two major 'skylines', the City [square mile] skyline (depicted above), and the Canary Wharf skyline (depicted below). Both boast beautiful skyscrapers. The newest edition to the London skyline is of course, The Shard; Europe's tallest building (depicted below). The Shard stands at 309.6 metres (1,016 ft) at its highest point. And not forgetting, The Gherkin (depicted below). One of London's most iconic and beautiful landmark skyscrapers. This building proves that a skyscraper does not have to be the tallest to be the most stunning and eye catching. London is the centre of the financial world [alongside New York City], thus there is a larger demand for office space, and since London cannot further expand, the only answer now, is to build up!
The Old:
Everybody knows London's variety of Old architecture, whether it be Imperial, Neo-Classical, Medieval and so on. London is also more well known for its older landmarks. The famous Houses of Parliament (depicted below), Buckingham Palace (depicted below), St.Pauls Cathedral (depicted below), the Tower of London, and so on. London is truly rich in its history, and it shows through its architecture. London's older styles are never ending, this is mostly because of the influences the city had during the British Colonial times and when Britain was at the peak of the worlds nations. Hence, many different styles of architecture and building were constructed in the city, and have left a legacy. London really does boast some of the finest older constructions this world has ever seen.
The Debate:
Is London's new architecture, especially the skyscraper boom, over shadowing the City's older landmarks? In my opinion, no. London will always have its beautiful and stunning older landmarks. And as long as laws prevent skyscrapers and big office buildings from being constructed besides the older buildings, then I do not believe there will be a problem. As this article is being written, more skyscrapers are under construction in the city (search: The Walkie Talkie, The Pinnacle and The Cheesegrater). However, none of these giants take away the views of our treasured landmarks. And the way I see it, is that we are building even more landmarks to add to our City's stunning range of architecture and design. Lets hope they keep up the good work!
