The
LONDON
UNDERGROUND
A Brief History:
The London Underground. The Oldest and 2nd Largest Light Rail Transit System in the world. On this day 150 years ago (1863), a steam locomotive pulled an array of carriages along the Metropolitan Line. At first the system was named the 'Metropolitan Railway', yet later renamed the London Underground. Within the first few months the system was moving 26,000 passengers around the City. The London Underground was the first of its type which later inspired cities such as New York and Paris to build their own metro systems. Many describe the London Underground as the 'heart beat' or 'blood stream' of Europe's largest City.
The London Underground Today:
Today there is about 402km/249miles of track thus making it the 2nd Largest metro system in the world, only after the Shanghai Metro. About 19,000 employees work for the Underground. The system is served by 270 stations and an average of 1,107 million people use the Underground each year! The London Underground has truly become part of the London experience, thus becoming a asset or even landmark in its own right.

My Personal Experience:
I personally adore the Underground. Since being a child, I have been using the Underground. Of course the system becomes a little daunting during rush hour, but nevertheless, the buzz and excitement one receives from travelling on such a system is astonishing. The artwork displayed around the system is beautiful, everything from the Underground Logo ('the roundel') to the Art-Deco rail stations. I appreciate that the system is not perfect and mistakes are made, but generally the system works very well. The system also thrived under strain during the 2012 Olympic games, when many speculated it wouldn't.
Did you Know?
The US talk show host Jerry Springer is the most famous person to have come into the world in a London underground station. He was born at Highgate station on 13 February 1944, where his mother had taken shelter from a Luftwaffe bombing raid by the Germans during WWII.
Underground Pictures:
Please take a look at these pictures and images. They do not belong to me, but they are very beautiful. I tried to get a few pictures that ranged the ages of the Underground, from the early days, to the present.
*There are quite a few pictures! Thus the Spoiler tab!*

How has the Underground affected Minecraft?
The London Underground has been the absolute inspiration for transit and metro systems around the world thus inspiring Minecrafter's alike to design and built their own metro and Underground systems. Even my friends and I have built a metro/underground system in our Minecraft City Project. I personally believe they are essential for a modern city project.
Happy Anniversary!
Thank You London Underground for 150 years of transport and trips throughout one of the greatest cities on earth! The Underground has greatly helped Londoners and Tourists alike in the past, present and hopefully the future. I'm sure the system will keep on moving in efficiency for the many generations to come!
