To be completely honest I do not get the unoriginal and lazy trend that has over taken almost every single game on the market; when players make long, pointless, and unoriginal usernames. For example such a username might be something like Ralph2267. Now you might say: “Worry about yourself, I can name my character anything I want” and while you have a valid point, I think that this issue affects more than you think and could easily be remedied by a minute or two of thought.
In MMORPGs where a main focus is spent on immersion and Role Playing I don't understand why you would give your character, the embodiment or your being in this virtual world with something as 12 year as something like BallsDeep69. Just imagine if you got trapped in this world (Sword Art Online style), and that name was how people viewed you. Do you want to remembered by BallsDeep69? I also don't understand why people are content to use numbers in your username. Sure if those numbers have a particular meaning to you then it would be ok, but most people use numbers as a way to use a already taken username and to get around having to use creativity on creating a new one. Lastly people who copy the names of gamer/Youtube stars you aren't fooling anyone. We all know their official usernames and are you that uncreative that you have to steal the name of someone else?
Maybe I just appreciate the role playing applications of modern games, but I spent time developing a name that was unique and special to me. As a result I have an identity that is all my own and in games (MMORPGs being the most applicable) this allows me to feel immersed rather than struggling and thinking “Which number combination did I use in my name again? Was it 012 or 120?”
