"But..." The princess's words trailed off. She stared in awe at the guard who had delivered the shocking news that she was being kicked out of the castle, all because a more beautiful woman had come along.

"You have three days to pack." The guard warned before walking back down the spiral staircase.

The princess, Sophia Isabella Ariana Poloschke (or Sophie for short), plopped down on her bed, dumbstruck. She was the king's daughter! She had a right to be here! The girl who was replacing her was just a stranger off the streets.

She picked up a mirror and inspected her face. What was wrong with her, so much that she was being booted? Her finger traced along her curved nose and traveled across her thin lips, down to her pointed chin that had always stuck out a little. The finger circled around her eyes; her round, shiny eyes. It agitated her that she wasn't good enough.

Sophie stood back up and walked around the room, her red dress flowing behind her. She crouched down, opened a chest and dug around inside for survival items. She'd need them out in the untamed world.

In the realm of Kashal, there were two main kingdoms - Poloschke and Faiz. There were many small towns and villages spread out over the landscape.

Who knows? Maybe she could go to the Faiz kingdom and become royalty there.

She continued rummaging through the piles of clothes and found a dagger. 'Good enough...' There were no other real supplies.

"Sweetie?"

Sophie turned to see her mother standing in the doorway.

She was tall and beautiful. Her hair was a dark brown, just like Sophie's. She had dark blue eyes, unlike her daughter's sky blue, and wore a long, fluffy purple dress. "You alright?"

Sophie struggled to her feet. "Alright?" Her voice wavered. "How can I be alright when I'm being sent away by my own parents?"

Maude made a 'tsk' noise from behind her mother. Maude was one of the maids.

"Now, honey..." Her mother stepped a few paces in. "I want you to know that it's not your fault."

"I know full well it's not my fault!" Sophie yelled. "It's yours, Cailean."

"You call me by my first name?" Cailean raised an eyebrow.

"From now on, I am not your daughter." Sophie stated firmly, "I am Sophia Urkhane, after the legend of the bear."

"Alright, Sophia." Cailean's jaw tightened. "You have one day to leave. Better pack quickly." She spun on her heel and left.

Rage built up inside Sophie. She kicked the wall and clutched her foot in pain.

The courier rushed in and handed her a package. He seemed annoyed. "This is from you father." He huffed and quickly exited before Sophie could say anything.

She studied the box. Why would her father send something through the courier instead of handing it to her himself? She opened the box to see a letter and many tools, including an axe, a shovel, a hoe, a pickaxe, and a sword. All of them were made up of wood.

Even if her mother didn't care, it was nice to know that her father still did.

Sophie stared down at her silky dress. She'd need some better clothes. She ran down the spiral staircase, all the way down to the floor, and ran out. Heading for the clothing store, she pushed through stunned people in the crowded street to get there.

The people usually only saw her out in public when she was riding a horse or accompanied by many guards.

Sophie pushed the door open and rushed into the store. "I need travel gear," She huffed.

The silent shopkeeper reached under his desk and pulled out some slim leather armor.

"Thank you." Sophie flipped a gold nugget at him, grabbed the clothes, and ran out. She walked more slowly this time, exhausted from her long run. While she was out, might as well get stocked up, right? On her way back, she hit the bakery, the butcher, and a couple of other general stores.

"State your business her, Miss Urkhane." The guard said when she requested entrance to the main gate.

"I live here." Sophie said, frustrated.

"Not according to the parchment here -"

"MacDuncan, you know full well that I live here!" Sophie hissed.

"Right this way." The guard swung his arm to motion her in.

"Yeah, I know." Sophie mumbled. She stomped back up to her room, to see another girl there, crouched on the floor, holding a rose.

The girl wore an orange dress that swirled out around here. Her hair was red and curly.

Sophie adjusted the golden crown on her head and cleared her throat.

The strange girl looked up, revealing a face that was beyond beauty. "Oh, are you Sophie?"

She had a petite face, which was sort of round. Her eyes were a honey gold, and shone beautifully underneath long eyelashes. Red lipstick glimmered along her lips, which were full and sleek. Her nose had the perfect slope, and rounded at the bottom.

"Yes." Sophie nodded slowly and took a step forward. "Why are you in my room?"

"Mother told me that this was my room." She said, turning her attention back to the flower.

"Mother?" Sophie shivered.

"Yes, the queen is my mother now." She murmured. "Yes, the king is my father now."

'Something is wrong with this girl.' Sophie thought, scowling. "What's your name?"

"Larissa."

"Well, I need to get some stuff ready. So would you please leave for a minute?"

"Mother told me I wasn't to go anywhere."

"Well, you are not princess yet, and I still am. So you must take orders from me." Sophie hoped this would convince her.

The girl didn't move for a minute. Then, she got up and faced Sophie. "Mother said you're just trash. Nothing to worry about."

"I am not trash." Sophie's hands curled into fists at her side. "I am a princess." Her voice broke at the last word.

"You don't sound like one." Larissa took a strand of Sophie's straight hair and rubbed it, like a scientist would inspect a sample. "And you don't look like one." She looked down at the tears on Sophie's dress from running on the street. "So you aren't a princess." Ever so carefully, she removed Sophie's crown and put it on her own head. She danced around the room, singing gleefully.

A hot tear ran down Sophie's cheek. She wiped it away quickly and moved over to her chest. After grabbing a backpack, she moved the contents of her shopping bag into the backpack. She rushed into the bathroom and tore off her dress, then proceeded to put on the armor.

The armor was kind of pretty, at least. The gauntlets had iron studs over them, and were cut at the elbow so she could move it freely. Underneath the leather was a thin cotton fabric. The chest plate was only connected to the gauntlet by this fabric. It had sleeves like a tank top. The leggings were like the gauntlets in appearance, and the boots were laced up.

Sophie left the bathroom and opened another chest. She stuffed as much money as she could in the backpack, then left without even looking at Larissa.

When she was halfway down the staircase, Maude stopped her suddenly and grabbed her by the shoulders. "Sophie, dear, do be careful out there."

Sophie stated at Maude for a moment, then wrapped her arms around the maid. "Thank you." She pulled away and rushed down the stairs, leaving Maude shocked.

"Leaving so soon?" Her mother - no, Cailean's voice came from a few feet away.

"You pushed me out." Sophie hissed.

Cailean ignored the threat. "Oh no, it's getting quite dark. Such bad luck for you, to be forced out at night, when the skeletons and creepers roam."

"Shut up." Sophie ran passed the guards, tears rushing down her face.

In the red light of the sunset, the people were heading into their homes.

The former princess took a deep breath. She'd spend the night at an inn, then leave the next morning. She had a feeling that this was the start of a disaster just waiting to leap out in front of her.

Sophie had never done well alone in any situation whatsoever. She had absolutely no skill in any sport, and spent most of her time inside, sketching or writing; reality just floated around her when she was inside her bubble.

But to her, her bubble was reality. In her books or drawings, she could be anything she wanted. An adventurer, a knight, even a dog if she wished.

But the only thing she ever really wanted was to be a princess. And now, that was shattered.

Shouldn't she be excited? She had already lived the dream of being a princess. Now she could choose a new fate. She was only sixteen; her whole life was ahead of her.

Maybe it was a change for the better. Maybe she would enjoy it. Maybe she just didn't know it yet.

These thoughts echoed in her head. 'Maybe, if, and I hope,' was all it ever was.

I hope you enjoyed :D
