Minecraft Survival Improvements

I truly love minecraft it is a beautiful game. It's really unique. It has different things for everybody, like, creative mode, survival, adventure maps and much much more. I'm an adventure and survival fan myself but I find myself a bit bored with survival mode now.

Its fun at first, punching your first tree, crafting your faithful pick, and housing yourself from the mobs that stalk the night. Then the next morning comes and, well you get the picture. Then you find obsidian and you make a portal, after that you say hi to the ender dragon and take the egg (which doesn't really do anything other than being an ornament for bragging rights).

It just doesn't have that survival factor. I don't feel like i'm one person in a huge open world trying to survive with anything that spawns at night trying to kill me. It gets to a certain point where I just get onto my world to harvest my automatic farms. I don't have anything to strive for and keep me going.

This brings me to my next subject, Food. Well, to be more exact, hunting. When it comes to getting food all you really have to do is whip out your sword and butcher anything that moves. Although yes you can also harvest seeds and start a farm, which I think is perfect and should be kept the same. Getting animals is way too easy though, there is no thrill for the hunt, no chase, no survival factor. What I think hunting should be is like hunting deer. They flee at the sight of you, this makes hunting more difficult and rewarding. Wolves come into the picture perfectly here as they can be tamed and used to pin down your prey as they can run faster than your average mob. Now you need to use the trees to get close enough, to make your move. This also makes bows more valuable as you can snipe them without the risk of them running away. What if they are on a plain biome you ask? Well why don't you lead them into that dense forest over there?

I've tried turning the difficulty setting up to hard but all it does is make the mobs more beefy and punchy (more health and damage). Then they just become a nuisance. I avoid them (which is quite easy as they are insanely slow) and just try to knock them off a cliff or into lava. I admit that it makes me a bit more crafty in how I take down the mobs but even then they are still easy to kill. This doesn't make the mobs anymore scarier either, I want them to be able to kill me, not because they do an insane amount of damage, not because I happened to stand in between a zombie and some lava, but because they are challenging, enough to take you down if you just randomly jumped in with your iron sword and spammed left click.

I think that hard mode shouldn't mean more mob health and damage. It should be tiny little tweaks and things that you probably wont notice but will dynamically change how hard it is. For example: skeletons arrows are more accurate and faster. This doesn't mean more damage it means that they may actually hit you. This makes it harder as you try to close the distance between you and that mob.

Which brings me to the ores. I'm pretty happy with what Mojang did with mining, with the caves, strongholds, and abandoned mines. Although I don't like how easily the ores come to you. Coal is great, easy to find and lots of it everywhere which is good for its use as fuel and torches (which you will need a lot of). Iron, its not easy as to find as coal (but still quit easy to find). Its rare at first but once you start hitting caves it gets to a point where it just replaces stone for tool materials. It sure makes a nice set of armor though. Once you get that iron sword and armor, it makes the game less fun, mobs are easy to take down, even in hard mode. Gold is just useless, other than a block for decorations. Diamond, oh the legendary diamond. It a game ending ore. Once you get it you are virtually invincible. Sure, its rare but if you find one vein of it you get a sword and piece of armor that will last you the rest of the game. Which kills the survival quality of the game. I like diamonds though, its something to strive for. It makes me want to leave my spawn to scour the land finding this treasure.

Overall, I think these changes will make Minecraft more of a challenge to survive. It requires a bit more skill and thought to do well in.

The rest of this blog will be split into different categories of what I think needs to be tweaked and how we can tweak them. To make survival more challenging and dynamic.

Ores
Diamond: Make it extremely rare. 2 or 3 blocks per vein as well.

Food
Holding a bone will make them follow you but sprinting or sudden movements will make them attack.

Mobs
Enderman: Should teleport more when they are fighting.

I love the idea.... but I can't let sheep run from me. :'( I love sheep! My in-game skin right now is me wearing a shirt with a sheep face on it....

Yeah I know but this could all be added in another game mode so that those who like the old Minecraft can still play it.

Wow, I really like this idea. Except, I have a few concerns about the hunting part. If the cows and sheep run, how do you milk them/shear them? Perhaps a way to make them stay longer so you can, but they'll run away again after a few seconds, or if attacked? Over all, I think it's a pretty good idea! I would love to see them put this in game.

I had the same thought, perhaps you could lure them into a fenced area and then once you have them all inside you could close the gate and then whip out your shears or bucket. They will start running but all they can do is be at the edge of the fences.
