The really ironic thing about villager trading is that, for some reason, they all involve the rarest substance in Minecraft – that is, the emerald – which is at the same time the most useless one. Now, the question of the day – WHAT is the reason behind their doing so?



Reason #1: Simply because emeralds are rare and good-looking. As observed in the history of human currency, the rarest substances and minerals, such as gold, are often regarded as the most valuable and are thus used as currency for barter activity – simply because they’re pretty.



Reason #2: To prevent deflation and encourage trading. Ores and substances such as iron, gold or diamond are much more common than emeralds, and can be found virtually everywhere, whereas emeralds are exclusive to the extreme hills biome. In order to encourage trading with players, villagers provide players with a vast and exclusive source of emeralds in exchange for items or services, and vice versa.



Reason #3: To discourage the damaging of historic monuments. Emeralds, apparently, are the only substance in Minecraft that cannot be obtained from looting chests from ancient dungeons and temples. By using emeralds as their exclusive form of currency, villagers encourage players to leave those structures alone.
