Honestly, I haven't really had any questions about this I really just wanted to express my opinion on the particular matter. Personally I do think Anime is a bit overrated, And while most of the time, I admit it does have a fair plot point, I really don't see what the hype is all about, I will admit however that the exaggerated expressions facial expressions do make it a fun thing to watch, and I have watched a few animes in my time, I would still much rather find something else to watch, Now your probably thinking: "But she uses so much GIFs with anime characters in them- and she's had anime style pfps in the past (for those who have been around since the early days of my existence)!!!"

And I will admit I love the style of anime, I think it really is a unique style of art, and it is fun to look at (exception for when to much skin is shown, no that's just wrong), now I really love using it as pfps, especially if it's creepy or has witches in it! Also Picrew for many reasons is amazing for me, I can pretty much make a customized anime pfp! So without going to in depth (even though I have crossed that line), Anime is for many reasons a interesting and complicated topic (I should have put THAT at the beginning) . And I can see why many people enjoy watching it, for me however it is just the representation of the art (So fancy).

Thank you for (possibly) wasting your time hearing me babble and saying pretty much the same thing over and over agian (XP)

I watch more anime than I'd like to admit, and I can understand your view of it.

To be fair though, as pyaroshi said, anime is an umbrella term for animated shows and movies made in Japan and other South-East Asian countries. So much like how American cartoons have different genres and styles, anime is much the same. You can lump "anime" as one generalized thing, but the reality is, it's not. There are certainly popular frequently used tropes in anime writing, but you can say the same for Western animated media.

Interestingly enough, there was a YouTuber who stated there's one big different between "anime" writing and "Western" writing: which is in how they try to get emotions out of the audience. Western cartoons tend to use character to create emotional response while anime tends to use situations and events to create emotional response. Here's the video if you want all the details and the examples given.

-Moongem- is apparently focusing on what an average western popular culture consumer imagines when they hear the term "anime". Stereotypes, tropes, and stuff.
I don't watch a lot of anime, but I've seen relatively varied kinds from 80's-90's anime movies to a handful of modern anime tv shows, and I don't remember much of the infamous exaggerations that makes a lot of people mad.

About the video, I think it's true. It also makes sense, as Japanese language alone is very situational - meaning is often drawn from the circumstances and pronouns are often omitted, etc. So already in that you can see that the self is somewhat suppressed and the situation is important.

Btw. Would you consider the Netflix Castlevania anime? It's not Japanese production, but it's clearly influenced by it and it's based on a Japanese video game franchise... I'd say it is anime, although when applying the criteria presented in the youtube video, it's a lot westernized in that sense.

I've honestly yet to watch Netflix's Castlevania, so I'm not sure. It's like the debate of whether or not Avatar: The Last Airbender/Legend of Korra should be considered anime or not. It's influenced by Japanese animation, but it was produced in America.

When you really think about it the term "anime" just comes from the English word "animation". In fact, when writing down the word "anime" in Japanese, katakana is used. Katakana is used for loanwords that come from other languages. So really the Japanese would probably consider Western animation "anime" because it's simply a work of animated media.

Depends what kind of anime, I guess. Anime is a huge umbrella term.

Yes, people call it all anime, but they're very different, just made in similar style.
