Original Skins: Do they exist anymore?

Minecraft: An infinte world with infinite possibilities, limited only by ones imagination and creativity... But IS there any creativity left?
Skins: A way for a user to display his/her/others personal preferences. But are they actually individuals?
Let me explain: Everywhere I go, all I can see are skins. Dragon skins, Robot skins, naked women skins (not cool), and some interesting designs, but you know what trumps them all? The generic hoodie/headphones combo. I don't see the point to them. Everyone has the right to make and use what ever they want, but are they made? Or just used? This combo is so overused it has become practically a joke.
Why do these skins exist in multitude? I have a few reasons:
A: They look "cool" and everybody else does it.
B: It takes no effort to make.
C: You can "customize" it as easily as it is to change a patent.
D: Society.
E: Swag.

Where has the creativity of Minecraft gone? Why has this once proud community degraded to the collective works of 8 year olds with no understandings of the words "unique" "personality" and "individuality"?

There isn't much that can be done, I can't force anyone to change skins, but  I ask of you all, try out other skins for once, it's not too bad. Try focusing on something other than headphones, sweaters, chains, and bandanas. It's not as cool as you think.

Don't percieve this blog as a bash on all skin makers. There are some beautiful skins out there, but they are being overlooked for simple, "appealing" skins of totes swagilicious bro skins.

Thank you for your time.
Comments are welcome of course.

Update: There are people who seem like they may be targeted by this. I'm not saying anyone has original skins or not. Please don't feel like I'm bashing you.

Update 2: It has come to my attention that I may be excluding some people. To those who create these skins on their own, good job for being unique in that sense, but (as a completely objectional suggestion) try making a skin that would make peopel go "Wow, I hadn't thought of a skin like that. I like that guy!"

2. Think it's ugly.

You, sir, deserve all the gold stars in the world.

There are original skin makers still left, but not very many. I make my own skins and occasionally I'll post one of them online. There's nothing wrong with headphones, sweaters, chains, or bandanas, but it seems like everyone has a skin like that. I used to like that kind of skin... until everyone started to have them. I miss when everyone was individual, but nowadays you will see 3 people with the same skin in 1 day. I hope I'm not being offencive to anyone, and I'm also sorry if i spelled anything wrong.

YES, there ARE some original skins. I agree, a lot are copied, but tons of people make awesome, original skins.

That's the point I want people to take from this. Not all skins are unoriginal, just the original skins are being overshadowed by these skins.

*sighs loudly* Okay since we are on this topic AGAIN for the hundredth time I am not even going to bother arguing about people being able to like what they like because that seems to just fly over peoples heads anyways. Also I know you have had an account for only two days but next time search to see if someone else has done a blog on the same topic recently before you make something.

Anyways while I agree that teen skins could be more original a lot of people on this site seem to have the mindset that the second someone joins they will be an amazing skin maker. This website has a comment section for a reason. So many people that make blogs like this never want to give feedback on individual tips on skins and it seems like they hope skinners will just automatically make skins in a way that they like.

I read some of your responses below like how this is an issue because there are more blogs about this and yeah it has been an issue for awhile now and do you know why? It's because everyone just wants to hope things will change without ever doing any work to actually change things. People just make blogs about this over and over again and then hope someone else will convince skinners to change things. Honestly if you people want change so badly why don't you actually try leaving tips on skins or requesting character skins if they accept requests so they can try something new. I'm not saying everything will work but at least try to change things before crying about it.

Thank you for the reply, allow me to rebute:
1. I admit I did not thoroughly check to see if this was being stated already.
2. It does NOT actually go over my head that people are entitled to their own likes/dislikes, but there's a difference between liking something, and making multiple skins of it.
3. Let me direct you to the 3rd paragraph of the blog: "There isn't much that can be done, I can't force anyone to change skins, but  I ask of you all, try out other skins for once, it's not too bad. Try focusing on something other than headphones, sweaters, chains, and bandanas. It's not as cool as you think." That is both a suggestion and a tip. I can't make people change their ways.
4. If this is such a "over-milked" topic, why do you feel the need to reply to them all?
5. It sounds to me that you're suggesting that unless I force people to, they WON'T change.
6. There is not a single tear on this page. Neither physical or pixelated.
7. I can do things on my own thank you, do you not see the support I have just from this blog? Times that by All of the blogs on here? Is that not something? Or is it not good enough for the close-minded, elitist thinking you have?
8. I haven't had the free time to go to every single swag skin on this website and say "Hey, do this instead." Why? BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY OF THEM.
9. I don't expect anyone to be the next picasso when they join. I still am less than stellar at making skins. But that DOES NOT mean you can just jump on the band wagon and make these skins before trying.
Thank you for your time.

1. I know.
2. Okay and what is the difference exactly? If someone likes a certain type of skin why wouldn't they want to make more skins of the same type?
3/5. I know you can't make other people change their ways and I am saying you should force people to. I am saying if you want change why don't you actually give people suggestions personally. I am not saying just you.
4. Well I don't reply to every blog on this topic but I do reply to a lot of them because I like seeing other peopls viewpoints.
6. I don't know I see a lot of tears on this page but that might be just me ;p
7. Okay you have a lot of support here but all the other blogs about the same thing had a lot of support too and we are in the same place we were months ago when people were saying the same things you were. I would love to see how I am the one who is close-minded and elitist when you are the one who hates skins just because of what they are wearing.
8. Again I am not saying you should go to every single "swag"(Seriously just say teen skins)skin on the website. I am saying that most of the people that make blogs like since just want to sit around and hope things change. Unless this blog makes it too the frontpage or every teen skin maker visits the blog section they probably won't see what you have to say. It's like getting terrible service at a resturant and instead of telling the company or something you make a blog about it and hope they see it any change things. Yeah they might see the blog but if you told them directly there is a bigger chance they will actually consider what you say.
9. I like how you assume that because the skins are simple that everyone can make them in like 30 minutes and be done. I can't make a skin to save my like and a teen skin would probably take me forever to make. Not every new person is going to jump into skinning by making original skins and a lot of people start by imitation because they see a skin they like. It happens with art too. Hopefully they will start to develop their own style but people shouldn't not be allowed to post their skins just because you don't like them. And a lot of people leave there comments open so it's not like they all aren't open to feedback.
10. Again like I said you don't have to comment on everything but at least try it on people that look like they have potential -_- It's not really that hard.
Thank you for your time too.

The problem is that there have more than likely been people who HAVE tried to force people to stop, whether rudely or constructively. It hasn't seemed to work. I'm asking others for help on this, not telling them to do it. It's not that people aren't allowed to post skins, just that they should seriously consider something more unique. If they want to post skins when they know that this is an issue amongst users, they better be able to back up why it's unique. If they can, power to them, and I won't say a word. But if they can't, maybe they'll learn that those skins AREN'T as cool as they seem.

This post is one of a milion others with the same topic.

But I agree. I try to make my skins as original as possible, but originality got no value these days.
I bet that if I made a skin looking just like the thausands of other skins, I would get a lot of XP.
There are few original skins. I've seen a lot of skins here on PMC taken from other sites, and they have not been taken down. There was some at the Underground Creatures Skin Contest that I know I've seen before, somewhere. I just can't place them. But I've seen them before. I just know it.

I know exactly what you mean. It's all about the fame, the recognition, the XP. It isn't about achieving anything that you don't just get automatically. If my post is one of a million others, then maybe people should realize that this IS a problem, instead of just stating that it's one in a million.

I didn't say that it's all about the fame, recognition or XP.
The fame I've had before. It got taken away from me, by a now successful YouTube troller.
Now I want to stay away from fame in the fear of it all happening again. Loosing YouTube, getting spam emails from angry fans and etc.

The recognition is nice to have, because some people know who I was before I took upon the name of Zahkrosis. Zahkrosis means Finite Sorrow in the dragon language from The Elder Scrolls series.
That feeling of some knowing my story and follows me in it means something.

I don't care about XP, but I do enjoy the thrill of looking the number going up after posting something.
Even better is when they download it. I take it as a compliment when they download.

We all got our stories.
And we should stop supporting the reposted skins that is full of remixes and colorchanges.

Sad to say, but this topic is milked..

Reason being just 2 weeks ago there was a blog explaining the exact thing you stated here.

Yes there's original skins, it's just you can only go so far with a BLOCK character..

Exactly what EyelessJackandStuff said. "It's just you can only go so far with a BLOCK character.." So far until what? You're obligated to add swagilicious decals and give up on being unique? Or is the generic human teen as broad as your view of skins can go?

Alrighty, so we both agree that there are 3 primary colors, yes? And then if you mix those colors you get the secondary colors. Now, this process is virtually infinite. Now lets add saturation and value to the mix. That makes the infinite amount of colors even more vast than it already was. That being said, there are a ridiculous amount of styles one can use in simply making a human with a 32x64 pixel canvas (not to mention the new 64x64 format). Now you can not only make just humans but every animal on this big blue Earth. Lets not just limit ourselves to Earth creatures but space creatures. Now we have no idea of what aliens look like leaving us only with our imagination. Do you recall the Sci-fi and Outer Space contest? What about the Inanimate Objects skin contest? Have you entered the most recent Underground Creatures Skin contest? Now I want you to really think about your statement that you can only go so far with a block character. Is that really true? You have this infinite world, yet one chooses to make an overused checkered jacket bearing, chain sporting, headphone wearing, swagtastic teenager? Now i respect your opinion, but thats just ridiculous.

I'm totally with you on paragraph four (five?). I'll browse the latest skins section some time after I post a skin and mine won't be there. Instead there will be a bunch of teen skins that were posted the previous day. And they ALL have more views than my skins. I don't get why people like such plain skins to be honest. There's really no shading in most of them...

I seriously think they should add a "origin tracker" for skins, and you can't use a changed skin that originates from someone else (not on the apps, though-that would ruin the social prpoerties of the apps).

I agree for the most part that teen skins are too popular and many people can make a stereotypical teen skin fairly easily. But one, you are not giving enough credit to skinners that actually make the originals of these plagiarized skins "B: It takes no effort to make ". It takes time to make a good new skin no matter what the subject matter, whether it's teen or anything else. Two, you are guilty of your own accusations. You claim that these skins lack creativity (and it's true many do) but you, yourself are writing yet another blog on this already over-milked topic. Does that seem right to you? And last but not least I understand that you don't want to offend anyone and that's why you included you disclaimer "Update: There are people who seem like they may be targeted by this. I'm not saying anyone has original skins or not. Please don't feel like I'm bashing you." but just because you apologize at the end of the blog doesn't give you the right to be so critical of others "B: It takes no effort to make.   C: You can "customize" it as easily as it is to change a patent.". I understand your feelings about the uncreative skins you often see now-days but try to give people the benefit of the doubt. Maybe there new to this and trying to learn to skin. I think we were all there, or maybe they just found a server they like and many of the staff have skins similar to those you described, and in seeing those was led to believe that skins like that are cool. They were new so they wanted people to accept them and like them for there skin. I often feel just as frustrated with some of these skins but I try to always remain respectful and keep my opinion to myself. Never out-step yourself and please don't fall into the same trap that many users on PMC (including me do). We join and immediately try to create something that is commonly popular just to get to higher levels. Just stay as original as you have been and stay active you'll get there eventually. Thanks for reading this grueling critism but sometimes we all need it.

I appriciate your honesty, I really do, but let me explain:
1. When I wrote this, I hadn't known that many others had talked about this. I just knew it was a problem.
2. I am not guilty of my own accusations. There is a difference between hypocriticism and honest uninformed.
3. When I say that "apology" its becasue people have posted "my skins are original" and "I try to be original" And it makes me feel like I'm hurting their feelings. All I'm trying to do here is raise awareness.
4. It really does take no effort to download a skin and use it.
5. I apologize for not properly recognizing those who made these skins first. I will mention that after this post.
6. I didn't try to do this to become popular. In fact, when I was signing up, I said to my friend "Let's see how long it takes for me to get banned."
7. When I say it takes no effort to make or to customize, I'm not talking about people who have made their own skins like these, I mean those who just download them and change the colors to look like their unique.
8. The ones who DO make their owns skins that look like these, correct me if I'm wrong, I said to just try something else.
9. People don't learn without praise and criticism. You have fallen into this cycle too. Just as I am criticizing others, you are criticizing me (not saying either is in a bad way)
10. Your post is by far the most insightful comment I've recieved. Thank you for your opinion.

All the creativity has gone into building. After all, the game was meant for it, not showing off how good of your skins are. Skins are more of a way to reconize people, and it's not bad if you make skins for other people.

This blog had a good point, but sometimes, you have to give building a chance.

Architecture has alwasys been the focal point of the game, but even then there's some issues. A friend of mine touches on this Here, and the point of this is to raise awareness about skins, not building. I do however accept your premise.

Well, hmmm. See, it's Pikachu. Everyone loves Pikachu. I personally don't see it as unoriginal.
Unoriginality is based off a few things:
Design (What is it)
Style (What does it look like)
Popularity (How many skins look similar to this)
And Societal influence (Is this "Mainstream" or "Popular" right now)
