Pay-2-Play: A Tale of Greed

Servers are a big part of Minecraft. Playing with friends is usually more fun than playing solo, and when you add plugins, hundreds of other players, and really cool builds to the mix, servers become a sort of Minecraft heaven. However, when money gets in the way, a little something called "Pay 2 Play" arises, and this is where things go from awesome to infuriating all too soon...

"Pay 2 Play" is a concept in gaming where the more money you spend, the more things you can do. This can get to the point where features such as spectating, chatting, and even winning (well, huge advantages) are all reliant on money. Pay $5 to kill anyone in the game! Buy premium and you can talk! Want to watch a spleef match? Get VIP now! It really is sad to see how low some servers go. Basically, it's a morality limbo.

The idea of paying for server features isn't always a bad thing! Servers cost money to maintain, so some type of a finance system is pretty much required to keep one alive. Really, it's when the server owners get greedy that the problems arise. Here's a list of features that should/could cost money, and a list of features that should always be free, no matter what:

FREE FEATURES:
- Chatting
- Sprinting
- Spectating
- Breaking All Blocks
- Server Stores
- Respawning

OPTIONAL "SPECIAL" FEATURES:
- Extra Server Space
- Gifts (Bonus Valuables)
- PvP Kits (Not really unfair ones...)
- Colored Names
- Teleportation
- Random stuff that gives no game advantage.

I've seen servers where you could literally be kicked just to let a paying player on, and I've seen servers where money will get you infinite diamonds. These types of servers where money = success are never fun or fair, and serve to line the owner's pocketbook. Stay away from these!

In conclusion, having buy-able features on Minecraft servers is OK in moderation, but when it greatly affects the non-paying players, something's wrong. Value fun over personal gain, and think about the community! If you liked this blog, think about diamonding, or subscribing. I make stuff like this often, along will skins. See ya,

- Tomandgreen

i prefer calling it pay2win, because i consider pay2play games are more like WoW, where you have to pay to actually start the game.
other than that, i totally agree with you.

I have a story about greedy server owners for you. I play on a server now called Abeo. It used to be called Abeocraft and was VERY popular. Vareide played on it, and he even made a trailer for the server. Right now the server is a small community with nice people and we all know eachother. The server now and the old server were whitelist. On the old server you could pay $5 to be whitelisted. Miniimac was wracking in the cash because the server was so popular. You think he used all the money to help the server? Nope, he bought 3 Iphones. Not one. Not two. BUT THREE. Talk about greedy.

Thank you for this, there is absolutely no other way to explain this to the server owners that do this.

Chatting isn't winning. Pay 2 Play is broader than Play 2 Win.

Pay 2 Play is what most people do for video games :/ you buy a videogame to play it, maybe a more in-depth title?

Notice, this was just put on the POP REEL!!

I must say, that running a server can get expensive, but a lot of server owners are not willing to work to pay for their server, they might pay a little by actually working, but the rest comes from those users that just HAVE TO HAVE the colored name and teleportation. Great post, I agree a lot.

It's a shame PMC-ers don't get paid for getting views. Like Youtubers. But hey. Oh well.

The money earned could be put into savings to keep the server running, buy special plugins/ equipment for the server, or advertising.

The point of the server is to earn money. The point of the money is to run the server. It's a cycle that leaves nobody happy. D:

Just don't play these servers if you don't like them there are plenty of others out there that let you o everything for free. Also it's up to the owners to decide how their server will be run. I completely agree that "VIPs" should get whatever they want they help keep the serer running for the other people so they should be grateful not mad!
Note: I never donate to servers!

yes i have payed some money ($20) to the server and i got some commands that are very for stuff like Hunger, death (you get the /god command), more plots, and a slot just for you if server is full, plus other stuff i can not remember.

i dont like the servers where you 'purchase a life or life pack' normally on hardcore pvp servers... or 'purchase OP' those annoy me...

my server has donations but 99% of the rewards we offer can be obtained normally when ranking up ( we are a creative server)

some of them are having a special emote made for your use, special prefixes and some small plugin perks.

but the servers that are Pay to STAY or Pay to WIN annoy me

I think that you should add this things on optional special features on the list:
-Funny hats that you can use in the lobby (blocks, animals, anything)
-Name your weapons
-Fireworks on the lobby (but not too many so it doesnt gets annoying)

I dislike faction servers because of this. Someone who is dedicating their time to the server is completely obliterated by someone who payed $5 for a diamond kit.
I also once found this server that you needed to pay to get full chat privileges. Free players could only send one message every 10 seconds...

How happy would you be if a man named Knarfer gave you a diamond?

I don't see what's so bad about having VIP slots. If the server's full, I think the person that pays and probably plays on the server more than you (because they're paying) should have a slot reserved.

Then what's the point of having the slot? The only time you'll need a reserved slot is if the server is full.

Yes that is fair and all but if it's a busy server that is hard to get into where you must ninja your way into a slot. It's just unfair to people who have to do that.

One time I was on a PVP server and you could pay for a mob disguise. While I don't mind THAT, the thing I did mind was they can attack you while in MD, but you can't cause any damage to them. So while I was trying to run from people, seeing as I had just started in a server filled with donators, some people with MD and speed (which you could also donate for) ran up to me and killed me. Not once, but every single time I went into a PVP area.

Good article, I heartily agree with this.

I am also a server owner, I'm working on a server myself.
Unlike other people I'm running the server myself, I have a PC dedicated to it.
I agree with what you said, Buy-able features are great, but only in moderation.

I'm a server owner and i am firmly against this, running a creative server it's not such a big deal with the whole advantages thing.
I only ask for enough donations to cover the servers cost until i can get a job. By default you can basically do anything , including WorldEdit. The things you can donate for are extra things to have a bit of fun with, like disguises and pets.

I think the main servers which do this sort of stuff are the big big servers, which just treats players as numbers and income, which is when a good server normally turns bad. Even if i am completely broke and can't afford to eat i will not use the donations money for my own benefit

What I don't get:
- Extra Server Space
I've seen servers where you could literally be kicked just to let a paying player on,
You basically said the same thing, but in one case its ok and in the other one its not... -.-

No, with extra server space it doesn't kick the players out. Its reserved for the VIPs.

I once tried to played on a server that you had to be on the fourms to do anything but talk in the chat, but the fourm membership costed $20 for a 4 week membership, $50 for a 2 month membership, and $100 for lifetime membership and that is why I used auto-op hacks and griefer hacks to fuck up their server.

You earned yourself a new sub. I really hate Pay 2 Play servers. Take mcctf for instance, 1 class is 3 bucks, and there super OP. basicaly your stuck with a guy with now powers, a guy with a horrid bow, a guy that can jump high, and a guy who can heal. I was on a server once and you had to pay 15 bucks a month to chat, sprint, shift, and break things. That was on sad server :/

rcher is free and can headshot (OP)
Medic can regenerate health and heal others (OP)
Soldier Climbs walls, can escape places fast, and easily gets the flag (OP)
Heavy kinda sucks but is a good support class

Ninja is OP but cant regen health at all and takes fall/enderpearl damage though
Engineer can be negated by archer
mage isnt all that good
necro isnt very good
chemist runs out of potions really fast

Explain! I get captures all the time with classes like soldier and get big killstreaks with archer... whats the issue here
