Pay-2-Play: A Tale of Greed
Servers are a big part of Minecraft. Playing with friends is usually more fun than playing solo, and when you add plugins, hundreds of other players, and really cool builds to the mix, servers become a sort of Minecraft heaven. However, when money gets in the way, a little something called "Pay 2 Play" arises, and this is where things go from awesome to infuriating all too soon...
"Pay 2 Play" is a concept in gaming where the more money you spend, the more things you can do. This can get to the point where features such as spectating, chatting, and even winning (well, huge advantages) are all reliant on money. Pay $5 to kill anyone in the game! Buy premium and you can talk! Want to watch a spleef match? Get VIP now! It really is sad to see how low some servers go. Basically, it's a morality limbo.
The idea of paying for server features isn't always a bad thing! Servers cost money to maintain, so some type of a finance system is pretty much required to keep one alive. Really, it's when the server owners get greedy that the problems arise. Here's a list of features that should/could cost money, and a list of features that should always be free, no matter what:
FREE FEATURES:
- Chatting
- Sprinting
- Spectating
- Breaking All Blocks
- Server Stores
- Respawning
OPTIONAL "SPECIAL" FEATURES:
- Extra Server Space
- Gifts (Bonus Valuables)
- PvP Kits (Not really unfair ones...)
- Colored Names
- Teleportation
- Random stuff that gives no game advantage.
I've seen servers where you could literally be kicked just to let a paying player on, and I've seen servers where money will get you infinite diamonds. These types of servers where money = success are never fun or fair, and serve to line the owner's pocketbook. Stay away from these!
In conclusion, having buy-able features on Minecraft servers is OK in moderation, but when it greatly affects the non-paying players, something's wrong. Value fun over personal gain, and think about the community! If you liked this blog, think about diamonding, or subscribing. I make stuff like this often, along will skins. See ya,
