(I apologize in advance, as I wrote this at midnight)
Pings are beneficial, pings are friends.
In chat, saying a word (like, for instance, your username) will highlight it and make a sound to alert you that someone is talking to you. But recently (and for all of time), there has been an influx of people refusing to use them. This is extremely annoying, since I'm never on chat just to be on chat, I'm always doing something else along side it. I quite oftenly enough miss out on conversations, and usually won't realize the fact someone is trying to have a conversation.
Using pings are a simple, yet extremely effective way to maximise your time on chat, adding the ability to coherantly carry-on a conversation while multi-tasking, and showing that you actually care enough about what and who you're talking to to write out their name.
I've noticed quite a few moderators won't use pings, and I honestly don't know why. It takes like three extra seconds, and eliminates tons of confusion. Many times I've been trying to talk to a moderator, and they don't use pings. I couldn't tell if they were talking to me, or if they were talking to someone else. The confusion level goes down with pings, so use them.
Seriously guys, this is more of a PSA then a work of art, but I've been annoyed by this for long enough without speaking out. I don't really care what is done with it, but I don't like people not using pings, and its unnecessary. Pings take about 2-3 seconds to type out, or using a shortcut (like the first two or three letters of their name, then hitting TAB) make it seem ridiculous not to use them.
But, to those who say that its our duty and responsibility to pay attention to conversations, not everyone has the time, gumption, or attention to do so. Lots of times, people are multitasking, and pings help conversations, along with pointing it at certain people. That can reduce bunches of confusion, which is good.
Again I say, pings are friends, not enemies.

I multitask during chat since, well, I'm in chat almost literally whenever I'm awake. I miss out on a lot of conversations to be sure while I'm multitasking, but if I devote my attention to chat I can easily partake in the conversations without any pings.
You can't expect everyone to want you in on your conversations. No one is going to say "Bacon is pretty good? Anyone else agree? PIKAMOAR". As mean as it sounds, they're asking anyone who's in chat, not you in particular. It takes work from you to enter into conversations, not work from everyone else trying to have one.
However, if you're having a specific conversation with someone and you don't get a ping from them after a while, maybe it's your job to check and see if they replied to your previous message, rather than their job to alert you of it.
So this all probably sounds mean, but it't just how it is. Chat belongs to those who pay it attention, not to those who rely on others to pay attention for them.
1: It totally doesn't, but almost never anyone is on chat exclusively.
2: Totally, but again, barely anyone does that.
3: I never said anything of the sort. I'm talking about keeping conversations going, not getting in on them. I seriously agree with you on this, but it makes no sense because I never said anything like it in the blog.
4: I'm not disagreeing
5: I didn't find it mean, the best advice is given blunt and truthful. But seriously enough, pings are almost the easiest things to use, the amount of shortcuts given, make it silly not to use them. Even if you are supposed to be actively engaged in a conversation, pings ensure it, and when there are a lot of people in chat, they clear up confusion.
It does happen in real life. People talk in groups. Words overlap. Yet, somehow, people still maintain conversations. You are really blowing this out of proportion for whatever reason.
When talking in groups, its usual for people to just be talking, not multitasking. In chat, its usual for people to be doing other things, but when conversing in real life, in particular in groups, its usual to just talk.
Again, chat isn't like a real conversation, and I don't see why you are connecting two things that are so obviously different.
I'm saying that its annoying and completely unnecessary for people not to use them. Its you that's brought up the fact that I don't conversation well. So what if I want it to be easy to converse with people? So what if I make a PSA saying how useless it is not to use them? So what if I can't be on chat just to converse with people?
