Welcome Ladies and Gentleblocks to an 'advice' blog concerning the current (and also future) project contests that will take place on PMC. These are just some things you could keep in mind when building, applying and even just thinking about entering the contest. Its a highly competitive battle of the builders and if you want to get that famed first place then you'll need to work hard!

1. Read the Rules-
Something that you should imperatively do to not only improve your own build but also facilitate the judging process, is to make sure your submissions abide by the rules put in place specifically for the contest. Make sure they correspond to the given theme (eg: Space, not medieval house) and make sure you enter the contest before the deadline, we will not judge it after the deadline is passed if you haven't entered it.

If you have any questions whatsoever about the rules or criteria, PM a judge immediately. If you find yourself unsure and posting a project that breaks a rule that you didn't understand, you may find your submission to be disqualified.

2. Read the Judging Criteria-
On the same page as the rules, you'll see a set of three points described as the 'Judging Criteria'. A good idea is to read these 3 points and try and analyse what they mean so that you can adapt your entry to them.

1) Concept & Originality - Think about what your building before you build. No rush.
2) Technique & Execution - From attention to detail to the overall project impact.
3) Presentation - Spend time presenting your project on PMC with quality screen shots and description.

Make sure your project is original and has a captivating edge (something different), make sure its detailed throughout and has a lot of impact and finally, make sure you present your project with elegance, style and professionalism. A shoddily done screenshot with a few lines of description will not get you high marks.

3. Presentation-
When presenting a project, you don't need an arsenal of filters, optical flares or countless years of Cinema 4D experience to make it attractive and professional. Take last contest's second place "Grim Thorim" by MrD4nny, his screenshots consisted of an in-game image covered with some black anamorphic lines and a simple bit of text, and it looks great!

If you are feeling adventurous there are countless tutorials sitting around on making nice renders or editing screenshots (shameless plug) really easily. If you can't dedicate time to making your submission presentable and great then there's not much point in you entering the contest.

Your description and storyline should also be (to a certain extent) grammatically correct and attractive with paragraphing and even spoilers. No judge will appreciate reading an entire block of text.

4. Advertise-

Your submission will only become a finalist if it has enough diamonds/favourites/views (a calculated ratio). If you make an absolutely outstanding map and you don't get enough attention then it won't make it through. You need to advertise.

STOP, NB: THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE ALLOWED TO ADVERTISE WHENEVER IN CHAT, YOU MUST OBEY THE 15 MINUTE RULE

PMC Chat is a brilliant place to advertise and make sure your 'advert' is captivating. Just saying "I made a map for the contest" won't get you much attention, if you add some description like "Here's my contest entry, an intergalactic warship over 5 million blocks big!" (Ragnur_Le_Barbare) then you will most certainly get people clicking on it.

tl;dr-
Go and read what I just said. If you couldn't be bothered to read it then why are you even here you sick sick person.

I understand it, but I corrected him so he knows for the future. The better your language skills are, the more likely you are to be successful.

The round planet is bothering me. Is it acceptable to edit the earth into a traditional Minecraftian cube, then make the project around it?

"If you make an absolutely outstanding map and you don't get enough attention then ità won'tà make it through."

That is just really sad, because it should not be based of off popularity of map, but rather talent.
*sorry for big font*

It is but sadly it would take an extra month then to plough through every entry, and then having to plough through the finalists again to mark them.
