Hey guys! Looks like blogging is going to be a consistent thing for me. *shrug* It’s fun to get my thoughts out there. So anyway, here’s the blog I was going to write last week but wrote “Where Did They Go?” instead. This blog is going to cover a lot of the same ground as my diamond blog, but sort of from a different angle and tone. You’ll see.

So what do you mean by the 1%?

For those of you who don’t know (who are probably few) the phrase “the one percent” refers to the fact that 1% of the world’s population controls and absurd amount of its wealth, something like 75%, or more specifically, the phrase refers to the people who control that wealth. When I refer to PMC’s “one percent,” I don’t literally mean the top one percent of our members here, but those who get every post on the pop reel, amass diamond counts approaching several dozen, and / or have sub counts in the thousands.

Okay, so what about them?

Well the issue with the real life one percent is that they have more wealth than the other 99% could ever hope to accumulate. Now, wealth does not bring happiness (cliché, but true) and it’s not my goal to become one of the real life 1%, but this blog, and my beef, is with the 1% of PMC. The pop reel does do us a service, showcasing PMC’s best content to those new to the site or with those unfamiliar with a section. For example, I stay almost exclusively in the skin section of the site (except to write these blogs, but I’m unfamiliar with the blogging community), so if I wanted to find a good server, the pop reel would be an excellent tool. The problem is when quality content doesn’t make it to the reel since the figurative 99% simply don’t have the sub or viewer base to get the diamonds quickly enough to get on the pop reel. So, for example, as a member of the skinning community, I know where to go to find good skins. There are skinners that are well known and I can visit their pages. I want to see fresh names, fresh styles. I wish that when people came to the skinning section, the same people’s skins wouldn’t always be showing up on the reel.

An example of unrecognised good stuff

I don’t mean to self-advertise here, but I think my work is half decent but unrecognised. So let’s just take a look at my stats for a sec:
undefined
Let’s find out the average views, downloads, and diamonds per post.

Views:
26807 views ÷ 91 total submissions = 294 views per post.
But let’s take out some outliers. I have 4 posts with over 1000 views, the rest are all ~500 or under.
(26807 – 6416396825461098) ÷ 91 = 140 views per post.
This may seem high, but consider the fact that pop reel skins get around 300 views per day that they’re up on that reel. But views alone don’t make the pop reel. Other things matter too.

Downloads:
2196 ÷ 91 total submissions = 24 downloads per post.
I have one outlier to remove, but in this case I have posts that don’t have a download option, so we’ll have to factor those out too.
(2196 – 1222) ÷ (91 – 47) = 44 downloads per post.
This isn’t too bad, considering that, in a lot of cases, pop reel skins (I keep mentioning these and not projects / blogs/ etc because I am primarily a skinner and am only really familiar with the skinning community) get a little over a dozen downloads a day, since most people already have a personal skin and stick to it.

Diamonds:
I can’t calculate this since I don’t have a diamond total, but I can confidently say I’m getting around 5 diamonds per post. Pop reel skins get around 15 per day.

So I can confidently say that, after a little research, it’s the diamonds that make a post, not the downloads / views / favourites / comments. For my new stuff, you have to basically half my average diamonds / favourites / views per post since I lost popularity after I left, which is fine, I get that. But when you think about how some of my skins from years ago are still floating around with only 5 diamonds and pop reel skins are getting 15 diamonds per day, that really puts things in perspective.

Your point? You just said real life is like that anyway.

Okay, I know, but I like to think the people here at PMC, just in general, are nicer than real life (or the LoL community). And I think if everyone followed some general diamond etiquette, that would be a big step in the right direction. And I have no problem with the people who make up the 1% (just as a rule of thumb I’m referring to PMC’s figurative from now on). I’m sure some of them are very nice people. If I ever make it up there, I’d be more than willing to take on an apprentice, advertise skinners who deserve recognition, that kind of thing. Actually, I can do that right now. Here are 4 great skinners who deserve more recognition that they have:

-_-TheWoolfmon-_-

MochijoS PMC

GallifreyianCat

_MagicPanda_

Now, you'll probably notice that these people have only been actve for about a month or so, but that's the point. Nobody's even heard of these wonderful people, but they totally deserve recognition. I found them just by scrolling through the recently updated section looking for diamonds in among the coal. So many great people just stay under the radar simply because not enough people do this.

A plea to everyone who reads this blog (and the 1% specifically)

Whatever section you contribute to, find a promising, undiscovered contributor and just be supportive of them. Give them diamonds, give them feedback, advertise them sometimes… just get recognition out for someone who deserves it but isn’t getting it. If everyone who reads this blog does this for only 3 members (it could be less but I know few people will see this blog and even less will respond to my plea), some very talented people could finally get that recognition that they deserve. So please guys. Let’s get some little people on that reel.

A note on the cover image:

Everything that’s in that image is for a reason. The diamonds, and the pile beside Vest Guy specifically, are obviously there to represent the large quantity of diamonds that 1% members get. The sub counts are there actually just to be provocative, some of those numbers are taken from the highest echelons of the PMC community like Sphax or Hypixel, but I think the ones around 1000 are representative of the people I refer to as 1% people. Just not 17,500; that’s disco_’s count. Lastly, we have Vest Guy. He’s there as a reference to the real life 1%, and the stereotype that rich people wear really nice suits.

Well, thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed hearing my thoughts on the subject. Diamonds are always appreciated, and I also have a forum page for skin requests or just general discussion surrounding me or my content.

Until next week,

I found this very interesting to read, me myself being low level and "unrecognised" (unfortunately :P) found growing the tiny bit i did hard...I myself never did try to advertise myself other than asking people in my skins to support me, I find if i took the time to try advertise myself it would be a different story.

but almost everytime i see good work while scrolling the skin pages i just see most of them done by decently levelled people, maybe i didn't look hard enough, but maybe if people practiced a bit, maybe they would be noticed! i am no example of this because i grew out of luck by getting randomly found by 2 people, not simultaneously, when my work could be considered sorta good, i find that some people don't get noticed because they don't try, most of the time releasing teen skins and other "unoriginal" content (believe me i have a burning hatred for teen skins!).

That is pretty much my opinion we don't see many people grow because of lack of skill or effort. Anyways, I am getting too off topic, I will just leave by giving some support to your account.

Thanks for the support!

in general I think advertising is the way to go about being noticed, but IRL everyone hates advertisemnts (that's why addblock was invented) and it's kind of unfortunate that that has to extend to PMC.
