Level 48 : Master Blob
This year I was required to complete a major work for my extended english elective. I chose to explore 7 mental illnesses and express them through the medium of poetry. In doing so, I hoped to tackle the taboos surrounding mental disorders in both a creative and artistic manner. Here are some of my poems:

In this blank verse poem, my protagonist is being crushed under the weight of her depression, whom she pictures as a black dog- obvious nod to the Black Dog Institute. The dog is trying to overcome her, by attempting to convince the protagonist that she is alone in a hostile environment.
The Black Dog

Sleep Disorder:

In this poem I focus on both sleep paralysis and insomnia, trying to capture the terror of the mental illness through the unsettling stanzas of a gradually increasing nursery rhyme.
The Clock

Bipolar Disorder:

In this shape poem, I chose the motif of an hourglass, which I used as a metaphor for the swinging highs and lows often experienced by people with this illness.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD):

In this poem, a girl attempts to deflect her worries by focusing her contempt on another girl she sees through a "window"
The Window

In this poem, a man confronts his "doctor" whom he believes is the cause for his mental condition. The last line in each stanza is missing, to symbolise the frustration and disconnection people with schizophrenia often have with society.
The Doctor

I tried to take a different approach to this poem, both in its concept and format. In "My Pal" A boy that his anxiety is a friend, although he can be quite corruptive..
My Pal

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID):

(Formally known as multiple personality disorder)

This shakesperean sonnet follows the path to acceptance of a person living with DID, seen through the seven acts of Shakespeare's "All The World's A Stage" Monologue from As You Like It
All The World's A Stage

I hope you enjoyed these poems. Feel free to PM me if you had any queries or are interested in the construction of these poems. Also feel free to diamond if you enjoyed and leave a comment as to how these made you feel, as well as any advice for future writing endeavours!

So of course we just chatted on your OC

but I looked at your other works and this is beautiful.
I myself, love writing, but am not the best at poetry.
I'm more of a novel-journal entry gal

Google images. Why?
I know you might have said... but it is still a bit confusing...
Why are they all about medical conditions/disorders?

Having first and second-hand experience with mental disorders, I chose this subject area for my major work piece. The medium of poetry is simply an artistic choice.

These pieces are all very good, and definitely explore the realm of mental illness in a thoughtful, artistic light. Really great job; I thoroughly enjoyed the read.

Pretty good ones ! In my opinion, they reflect perfectly the feelings and sensations of the people who unfortunately live in pain due to these illness. Great job, although these days should be for a bit of joy :D

Thanks GGJ16! I have to say that writing these poems was one of the most mentally strenuous things I have done. It was extremely hard not to find myself caught up in the solid 4 months of researching medical material and case studies that usually ended in suicide. Definitely need a smidge of joy n chocolate right about now :)
