Pornography on Planet Minecraft?

Hi guys,

This is a semi rant about the inappropriate adverts on PMC.

The Problem

Minecraft is a game targeted at a younger audience of about 9-12. This site is also targeted at that audience age range. Why then do we allow pornographic adverts on PMC? In fact why do we need adverts on the website at all? Now while I respect that running a website with such high traffic is expensive, we see that this is not the way to be raising funds and there are genuinely a thousand other ways to generate the revenue that is required to run the website.

The Solution

Get rid of the adverts on pmc.

That's it. I mean, they are very irritating and a young child is much more influenced by an advert than an older child/person. Making it very likely that a young child will click on the ad. THE AVERAGE AGE FOR EXPOSURE TO PORN IS 11 Yes, eleven years old.

The bad outcomes of the problem and why we need this solution

PMC getting attacked by parents that don't want their kids to watch porn getting mad. We don't want that.

End of.

Please Cyprezz?

The Problem: Parents are using technology to raise their kids.
The Solution: Monitor what they do on the computer and what sites they go on. Or, you know, actually be a parent.

Or one could actually raise their kids using technology RESPONSIBLY, by for example creating a Local Area Network that is protected with a decent router / firewall with URL filtering running on a transparent proxy, if one is really worried about what content reaches the eyes of one's child.

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about here, because do you actually believe that parents these days are able to monitor constantly what sites their kids visit.. everywhere.. on their smartphones.. at their friends place.. constantly.. REALLY? And lets not talk about the fact that it's kind of hard to raise kids these days as both parents actually need to work in order to be able to pay back the debt they have with their banks.

I suggest thinking before you type, makes you look less like an idiot bmxbrat484.

I said parents using technology to raise their kids was an issue, not parents incorporating technology into the kids life. The issue is when parents just sit their kids in front of a TV/Computer and leave them to their own devices, with minimal interaction. I've seen it happen. Thankfully not to me.

"And lets not talk about the fact that it's kind of hard to raise kids these days as b'oth parents actually need to work in order to be able to pay back the debt they have with their banks." If they're so far in debt, why would they be wasting money on technology in the first place?

I've never had any type of dirty add pop up. That proves what you're doing in your spare time.

Ads are probably the best way of raising money for a website, so that's not going to change. As others have said, this ad might be based on your browsing history, or it might be a generic one that "accidentally" got through (assuming PMC has restrictions set for the kinds of ads that are allowed, which they probably do). If parents want to attack PMC for this, they should attack the internet for having porn on it in the first place.

Big problem, I know. If everyone got Adblock, the site wouldn't make any money. And personally, I wouldn't want some of the younger PMCers seeing that.

If you have add blocker plus then there are no adds. Therefore it eliminates the problem all together.

Adverts are based on your search history.

That's strange, I don't use google to search. I run google chrome portable and search in bing.

So, in theory I should have no adverts?

Nope. You will still have adverts. I can also guarantee that if you clicked on that, you would not see porn and you would just get a virus. PMC will not remove it's ads because it gives it the money to keep this a free site. The only way a child will get a pornographic ad is if he/she is always searching up porn.

Nope, as Paril stated PMC does not use Google Adsense.

But as I just showed you, it's not based on search history?

Not to mention the fact that the adverts are from Google. If you don't use google, then they cannot have your search history

= There would be generic adverts/no adverts

=Porn

PMC doesn't use google's ad system, and it doesn't JUST come from google searches.

Even if you don't use google then you would still get them. Google adverts are based on your search history, I don't know where you got that from but they are. Again, I am 100% sure that ad is not porn. Go ahead and click on it if you have norton to protect against viruses.

Then that's again a serious problem.

PMC has just been screwed over with security problems and we still have virus adverts?

PMC doesn't control which ads are displayed. You may think that their are countless ways to get revenue, but the easiest and most practical way is by advertising. With as much traffic as Cyprezz is getting it would be impossible to get money any other way.

Ehm do you know ad programs, seems that you don't. I know ad programs and you can select categories of ads you want to allow to be selected for viewing on your site. It's as simple as AnonymousBear states in this blog, it's a matter of disabling adult ads using the control panel at the ad program's website... anyway

Good blog AnonymousBear. I don't have this problem as I block all the ads on my firewall using URL filtering on the transparant proxy, but I understand why this could be a problem. Worth a diamond.

Look at the top right corner of most ads. You should see this cute little gray font that says "AdChoices" followed by a blue pennant. http://www.youradchoices.com/
I suggest you retract your "diamond", Phrozenbit, before you make yourself look like an even greater moron than you already have.

You are not really reading what I've posted, and don't have a clue what your taking about. I DON'T GET THE ADS BECAUSE I BLOCK THEM ON MY FIREWALL! So i don't get the freaking gray font that says "AdChoices" followed by a blue pennant because uhm.. I DON'T GET THE FUCKIN' ADS.

congratulations, bmxbrat484, You're now officially the biggest ignorant brainless idiotic moron in this comment thread, and I'm sure the author agrees with me. Now go away.

I read and understood every word you said. I am not the "ignorant brainless idiotic moron". I don't have to resort to cursing, caps, and insulting to get my point across. The previous comment was directed to anyone who does get an add, who think this may be a "problem", such as AnonymousBear.

Exactly the response I thought I would get. I fail to take you seriously as you come across as anà hypocrite. Yes I resorted to caps, and insulting because well you started it, and now you claim you don't need to resort to insulting ? You sorta fell right into my trap I laid out:

"I suggest you retract your "diamond", Phrozenbit, before you make yourself look like an even greater moron than you already have."

I also stated a potential solution, one that technically would be moreà beneficial then your's as that relies on an external party, mine does not. If you've understood every word I said, you should have know that therefor I get the impression you actually don't fully understand.
