Hello, thank you for deciding to click on my FLCL review. I'm writing this on my phone, so apologies if there are more grammatical errors than usual. I'll try and make it short and sweet.
FLCL is a 6-episode OVA coming of age comedy anime about a teenager named Naota, who lives in a self-described "ordinary town" that just so happens to have a giant factory looming over the city, it's just another part of Naota's boring life. One day, however, he meets Haruko Haruhara, who describes herself as an alien. She moves into Naota's home, and with that brings all sorts of chaos into his life.
The best way I can describe FLCL is "random". The anime is very fast paced, packing as much creative spark as possible into it's 6 episodes. You can tell it's a show made out of passion from the creators, as basically every episode contains meta commentary and/or is has elements directly influenced by the creators' lives and interests.
The plot can easily be seen as nonsensical and cluttered, especially upon first viewing. However, after several watchings (or just watching analysis videos on YouTube) the story and it's many hidden metaphors, whether said metaphor is just a well developed dirty joke or a philosophical view on growing up, they all take form into a greater meaning once you take the time to pull the pieces together. This can be a turn off for those looking for a more slow-paced show, or one that doesn't require a bit of digging to understand, but if you do take the time to understand FLCL, trust me, you won't regret it. It has messages that will likely stick with you for some time, and the entire show takes a whole new light, arguably for the better.
On another note, the characters are just great. The leads are hilarious (thought I found myself easily going from laughing to emotional thanks to the amazing efforts made by the creators and voice actors alike) and have distinct and lovable features as well as trackable development throughout the story, and they all help play into Naota's coming of age story and the greater themes of the show. Haruko and her quirky nature are easily a highlight of the show, helping to set apart for me what could otherwise be a much more dull story from the rest and making it all the more memorable. Naota is the perfect pick for the lead, embodying everything the story is about and helping carry the audience through this wild ride. He's also fairly fun and interesting to analyze, especially his development of maturity throughout the show.
Of course, this wouldn't be a FLCL review without mentioning the outstanding soundtrack by the Pillows. While we all my have different tastes in music, I think most of us can agree The Pillows really outdid themselves for this one. If I may have a say in it, the soundtrack is probably the best out of any anime I've ever seen (or heard). The music works phenomenally with the tone of the show, and together the two make for an extremely fun experience. If for nothing else (though I still highly beg of you to see this anime), I recommend watching this anime for the music, or, at the very least, listening to some of the music on a service such as YouTube. Hopefully it would convince you to give the show a shot, especially if you find you enjoy the music as much as I do.
I highly recommend watching FLCL. Right now, a search of FLCL subbed on YouTube will bring up a full playlist of the anime subbed in very high quality (almost unchanged from that of the quality on services such as Hulu, which FLCL is also available on), so you basically have no excuse not to see it if you're interested. I would also recommend seeing an analysis of the show if you want a better understanding, or try and come up with your own. The beautiful thing about art is you all can have your own personal interpretations.
Overall score: 10/10
Story: 8/10
Characters: 9.5/10
Soundtrack: 10/10
Visuals: 10/10
Voice Acting (Subbed, haven't heard dubbed): 10/10
Amazing work to the creators of this gem.
