Levels. PMC is pretty much divided on there meaning. One half realise that actually, they do mean precisely nothing. While on the other hand, the other half seem to believe they make all the difference. The truth is that their meaning, if any, is purely cosmetic. You get a fancy title, thats about it. On the the members list people might be more likely to see your name and go to your work but most of the top 25 are famous enough in their own right.

Levels were added in as an indicator of the quality of your work, to show that this person is level 50, they've have out-putted some good work, they're level 3, they probably haven't. In truth even this isn't the case, we were all level 1 one time or another, that doesn't mean the quality of the work that was out-putted was bad, we were just unknown. On the other side of the coin, a level 50 may spam out low-quality work, that eventually collects them that amount of XP. Levels don't give you any authority on the site, a level 80 has no authority over a level 1, just because they have a higher level. Nor do levels increase your chance to being promoted to a moderator rank, that's all down whether you're a good member of the community or not.

It seems often that levels may be the main part of theft. People who feel that stealing skins belonging to someone famous, maybe a well-known mod. They feel that this would get them to a higher level and that they'd have some sort of power. In truth you end up having it all deleted, a ban and you lose any respect you may have gained. Stealing is never a viable way to level up on PMC, you will always be caught and punished, whereas if you sunk your time into making something creative, you'd earn the levels you desire and respect too.

Being creative is often seen as being a key part of the community, I suppose as something thats come along with minecraft being the ultimate sandbox is that it really tells apart those with artistic talent from those who don't in a whole variety of ways. Generally those that have greater artistic talent get a higher level than those who don't. Maybe thats true, but that doesn't mean you won't get recognized on PMC, or that you will never get a high level. Look at disco, a positive genius when it comes to redstone. I'm not sure if theres anyone out there who could come close to bettering him when it comes to redstone. And sure, his projects do have a unique aesthetic touch, and he has released his own texture pack, but ask anyone whose heard of him what first springs to mind, and I bet you 90% would say redstone. As well as redstone, modding and blogging don't really require artistic talent, and there are plenty of well known modders and bloggers out there.

At the end of the day, if you feel you really can't do any of this, hang out in chat for an hour a day, post regularly in the forums, give it a month or two and you'll be a well known name around PMC.

Yes... I really don't know why people think posting, like, a gif they found over and over in a "blog" and then making another and another to get XP would get them famous or anything. Another thing that annoys me about that is it just shows all they want is to be well known and famous.

I'd have to agree. Levels have no value.

Feel free to supply me with one if you think you have a good one, if I feel strongly about it, I'll do it. Otherwise I'm gonna keep doing topics that I feel strongly enough about to write a good blog.

Do you think the level system needs to be removed or replaced with something more efficient and community-focused?

I'm not sure, it seems to be a debate provoking topic and I can see both sides of this argument, only time will tell I suppose, whether any decides they dislike it enough to bring it up properly but I see no real problem with it.
